Today is Election Day, California! From my two decades delivering housing to middle class families, serving as President Obama’s Ambassador overseas to nearly 8 years as Lt. Governor, I have the experience and proven record necessary to serve as a Treasurer Californians can trust.

California, we are one day away from Election Day! Your ballot must be postmarked by Election Day, so today is a great day to drop it in the mailbox or return to it to a vote center. In order for democracy to work, we all need to participate, so be sure to go to vote.ca.gov to make your plan.

The long weekend is a great time to fill out your ballot, California! Voting is one of the greatest pleasures of American democracy, and I encourage everyone to participate and be part of the voices that shape the future of our great state.

Great to join the South Bay Labor Council for their Canvass launch this morning! I am so grateful to our brothers and sisters in organized labor who work so hard to elect candidates that will fight for California’s working families.

For this month’s book club, I read Governor @gavinnewsom.bsky.social’s autobiography, Young Man in a Hurry. The book offers an insightful look at his life, with a detailed first-person account of the challenges he faced. I highly recommend it and look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts on it.

As the former U.S. Ambassador to Hungary, I witnessed firsthand the early rise of Viktor Orbán and the consolidation of power that followed. Yesterday, the Hungarian people made their voices heard—choosing a new path that puts democracy, accountability, and the future of their country first.

This month, I read ‘Heart the Lover’ by Lily King & it took me back to late nights writing creatively, finding my voice, & falling in love with storytelling. It reminded me why a liberal arts education matters: it teaches us how to think deeply, feel fully & tell our stories. Highly recommend! 📚✨

First Colbert. Now Kimmel. Who’s next? Ben Rhodes is exactly right about Trump creating an environment where people start to self-censor. It is right out of Viktor Orban‘s playbook which, as Ben, notes, Trump & his administration have studied. The fight to speak the truth is far from over.

Democracy is under threat, and Americans today have fewer freedoms than generations before. But we will never back down. This is America. We are a nation of rebels, and we the people—not one man—will shape the future.

Donald Trump was all for early, absentee, and mail-in voting as long as it helped him and Republicans. Now he’s flipped, parroting Putin, a foreign dictator who has no place in America’s democracy. Trump doesn’t want fair elections, he just wants elections he can rig.

At the Governor’s press conference today, U.S. Border Patrol agents staged themselves outside the Japanese American National Museum, the same site where Japanese Americans were once rounded up and forced onto buses to internment camps.

When Trump had the chance to stand up for law enforcement on Jan 6, 2021, he didn’t. He refused to call in the National Guard, called the insurrectionists “patriots” & “great people,” & described the attack as “a day of love.” Now he uses them as a political prop for his theatrical power grab.

First, the Trump Administration sent National Guard troops to California for political theater. Now, they’re doing the same in Washington, DC. It’s a waste of taxpayer dollars and a dangerous power grab. California stands with DC in rejecting these stunts and defending our democracy.

CA stands in solidarity with Central TX after this weekend’s catastrophic flooding — one of the deadliest in the U.S. in decades, claiming at least 89 lives. We’re especially holding close the families mourning the young lives tragically lost at Camp Mystic, and those still searching for loved ones.

Nearly 250 years ago, our founders imagined a nation rooted in liberty, justice & democracy. Today, those ideals are under threat, but the spirit of 1776 lives on in every American who shows up & speaks out. This Fourth of July, let’s celebrate our freedom — and fight to protect it 🇺🇸

JD Vance rolled into California, shut out our local press, and showed us exactly who he is: out of touch, disrespectful, and proudly racist. Calling U.S. Senator ALEX Padilla “Jose” wasn’t a mistake—it was a message. And Californians see right through it.

Proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with thousands in CA & millions across the country to say it loud and clear: NO KINGS ALLOWED HERE. We’re standing up to authoritarianism, rejecting Trump’s power grabs, and defending our democracy. In CA & across America — We won’t be ruled. We will be heard.

I saw the authoritarian playbook up close as Ambassador to Hungary. Viktor Orbán was calculated. Trump is reckless — tanking the economy, targeting workers & going after California, the state that gives America its biggest paycheck. His power games are hurting lives & livelihoods for Americans.

U.S. Senator @padilla.senate.gov was put in handcuffs for simply asking a question. That’s not law & order — that’s authoritarianism. If this can happen to a U.S. Senator, I don’t even want to imagine what this means for everyday Americans.

What’s happening in LA isn’t about safety — it’s fearmongering. Immigrants are part of the fabric of our great state. CA stands with our immigrant communities & is taking action to protect them. Stay peaceful. Don’t give Trump what he wants. Our strength is in unity, not chaos.
