Irish migrant living in Switzerland.. Post mostly about brexit with an Irish/European slant. Pseudonym, for work reasons, is a deliberately misspelt hat tip to Brian O Nolan, the Irish novelist, playwright & contrarian. Time person of the Year 2006.

as we edge closer to Brexit day:10 years on...it brings back lots of memories. One of my favourites is Irelands Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, explaining to UK PM Boris Johnson how complicated the whole brexit thing will be over Northern Ireland. Sound On.

The EU are immensely proud of it. Rightly so. It was a masterclass in diplomacy. Persuading the British it was their idea was genius. Remember the "hand of history" speech from Blair? 21 years later, Leo explains to Boris how complicated the whole brexit thing will be with NI. Sound On. 2/2

reminds me of that time Zig & Zag left RTE to join Channel 4.

correct and in the same breath to suggest there wasn't a colonial hierarchy in place...like there still was in NI until recently, by design, is a gross misrepresentation. the Anglo Irish in NI are still fighting against the Irish language to this day and would not like being called "Irish".

this is the sort of airbrushing that is worrying. It would be more correct to say a certain hierarchy came with Colonialism that helped divide & rule. Fun fact: the "Irish" who benefitted most from the partition of Ireland Darlymple mentions do not like to be called Irish.

not really. a certain hierarchy came with colonialism that benefitted one section of the community, who e.g. happened to be loyal to the crown, in a form of apartheid that, until very recently, existed in NI. btw the "Irish" who benefitted most in NI don't like being called Irish.

I notice a concerted effort to redraft history by the british recently. in NI, the DUP are even fluffing up their connections with the declaration of independence - an event that, ironically, led to the end of british colonial rule in USA amidst claims "St patrick was protestant". sound on

I wasn't suggesting you were. I just notice the airbrushing of british history is in full flow at the moment. The DUP fluffing up their association with the declaration of independence, that brought an end to british colonial rule in USA, or "St Patrick was a protestant" still makes me chuckle.

british unionists in NI are hilarious. they backed brexit and incredibly held the balance of power in the UK when Theresa Mays snap election backfired. In years to come, dictionaries will have "british" as shorthand for incredibly stupid and bonkers strategy. congratulations.

As chatter of triggering Article 49 (to join the EU) starts in the UK, adopting the Euro, Schengen and other optouts the UK previously had as a member, are the least of their worries. In Ireland, we're already planning for the collapse of the UK Union & Reunification in Ireland. 6/6

good point. when theresa mays snap election back-fired, the DUP, incredibly, held the balancs of power in the UK and kyboshed her soft brexit. The UK ended up with a DUP shaped brexit! Journalists in Dublin did wonder if the DUP were "working for the other guys"!

in Norn Iron...british unionists have a thing about pineapple & cheese on a stick.

is cheese & pinapple on a stick called a Hawaiian Cocktail Stick? Asking for Mrs Buttfield.

the irony is not lost on Europeans. The French joke that the English are pumping so much untreated poo into the channel, migrants will be able to walk over soon. brexit britain has become, quite literally, the arsehole of Europe. Hastings, England 👇

it doesn't surprise me. I get Eurostar a lot and have experienced the crazy queues at St Pancras since 2020. Incredibly, you still hear "they are just punishing us" from brits who still haven't joined the dots between brexit and becoming non-EU nationals. It's truly extraordinary.
