Now that I’m actively working on cushionapp.com again, I’m making sure to blog every feature launch, like I used to. Feels so good to bring closure to a launch and celebrate it, but also provides extra marketing content for new users exploring the features. Check it out here: cushionapp.com/blog

my approach to the finer things

🚀 It’s live! For the past couple months, I’ve been jamming with @devin.bsky.social & @narrowd.bsky.social on a website for NBA All Star Luka Dončić: 77x.world. The 3D was all Nick & Devin while I tackled the UI and user flows. I had a ton of fun matching the glitchiness in the UI, if you notice it…

I love working on these little big details

I recently wrapped up a project for @larvalabs.com, animating their “Quine” generative art series, and I wrote about the process: destroytoday.com/blog/animati...

Already had a great plumber and a great electrician. Finally found a great drywall guy.

I was browsing a spa hotel website while listening to Nine Inch Nails and I think I made an A24 trailer.

Side Project Saturday: Finished the MVP for bball.app to… ✅ Send an email to my bball crew about a run ✅ One-click a link to update their status ✅ Update the status in realtime for anyone viewing the page

Gotta love realtime Postgres. Can’t wait to see these updates happen with real people.

Making lots of progress on the bball.app mvp. Currently, getting the app up-to-speed with the “features” of the spreadsheet that I manually update. Also so refreshing to build an app without any CSS. Lets me focus on functionality without being too precious about design. bsky.app/profile/jonn...

✅ Google auth Using supabase.com for the mvp, so I can quickly spin up the database and auth. <chanting> mvp! mvp! mvp!

Coding smoke is such a fun & satisfying exercise. (from the footer of cushionapp.com)

Aside from little details, my dad never had an about page on his website, but I knew the staggering number of publishers, art directors, and authors he’s illustrated covers for, so I decided to make his about page speak for itself by listing them all in one place. 💪

I also snuck in a surprise animation for his signature. I knew I wanted to animate this from the start using his exact timing and pacing, but also knew this would be a real technical challenge.

The new design fits on mobile (a low bar) and also includes a few extra details, like transitioning the theme color to match the book you’re viewing. 💅

🔊 New website just dropped! I redesigned my dad’s website for his freelance book cover illustration studio: hallmanstudio.com

Here’s its placement on the website, for context:

Reached a decent spot with timing and easing—for now. Might give my eyes a rest and revisit it fresh later, but I’m pretty happy so far. I have a feeling he’ll like it.

Got the path animations sequenced, but still need to tweak timing and easing. Definitely looks promising, tho!

Yeah so I think this is gonna look pretty good… All the paths are animating at the same time here, but the final version will be sequential, like his real signature. Luckily, I’ve seen him write it a million times, so I know the exact speed and pacing to aim for.

Already got the proof-of-concept working in code, so now it’s just a matter of drawing the remaining paths, then tweaking the timing and easing.

Wrapping up my dad’s website for his big promotional launch tomorrow and sneaking in one last delightful moment where his signature animates in… First step is cutting it up into parts that I can cleanly mask in with a path animation:
