Hantavirus can cause a serious pulmonary syndrome with a high fatality rate. Clearly a scroll of social media shows a mix of us all learning more in real time. Infectious diseases and critical illness are humbling. I’m glad to see a push towards mandatory quarantine for all exposed.

Health officials are still learning more about the outbreak of Hantavirus, so important to avoid overstating our knowledge right now. It is a virus capable of causing severe respiratory illness though it is not nearly as contagious as flu/covid. Always remain vigilant.

The President’s own FDA has not authorized e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool in adults. The reason? Mixed evidence. Proponents believe it’s a harm reducer, skeptics aren’t convinced. Amongst kids? Near universal concern of harm, especially from flavored products.

Great to see the @FDACommissioner authorize expanded access for Daraxonrasib, a promising but still in-review chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer. As we discuss, Expanded Access for challenging to treat conditions is an important program. Good news for once!

Credentials matter to be the US Surgeon General. Past SGs have been active clinicians in fields like pediatrics, internal medicine, or primary care. Many have had prior military or government experience. All have had rigorous public health training. Sustained excellence matters for this role.

The US Government used to be the strongest supporter of new therapeutics to save the lives of people battling metastatic melanoma or pancreatic cancer. Tools exist. They need support, resources are smart regulation. It’s no longer happening and patients will bear the burden.

You can’t import another country’s vaccine policy without first importing their actual healthcare system. Our vaccine recommendations fill structural gaps in our healthcare system, which is widely regarded as fragmented, inaccessible to many, and riven with inequalities.
