Authoritarians attack institutions—the media, the courts, universities—when those institutions refuse to do their bidding. Those that stand their ground are often punished. While many ⚖️ law firms chose to cut deals with Trump, Perkins Coie chose a different path. It refused to bend the knee.

Attempts to bar Asian immigrants from owning land are littered throughout American history. Today, history repeats itself. States like FL and TX have spearheaded a wave of legislation restricting property ownership by certain immigrants, including Chinese.

The International Hotel stood at the center of one of San Francisco’s most historic fights for housing justice. In 1977, elderly Filipino and Chinese immigrant tenants were forcibly evicted in the middle of the night as supporters rallied outside in protest.

ICE continues to terrorize immigrant communities this week forcing Immigration Judges in SF to shut down their courtrooms for safety reasons. ICE presence means people have to make the difficult decision between attending their court hearings and face arrest or abandon their court cases.

The courts and state/local governments are a bulwark against federal overreach. However, their ability to stop the federal government in dismantling our democracy depends on all of us. The courts and state/local governments are the first line of defense, but they alone cannot form the resistance.

The Trump administration has weaponized international students in its efforts to censor free speech, undermine universities, and instill fear in immigrant communities—without regard for the catastrophic long-term consequences for the United States.
