We are on the cusp of an El Niño. That means elevated bushfire risk, drought, and extreme heat. But what's different from 50 years ago is this: climate change has already shifted the baseline.

This time last week, firefighters were up against catastrophic fire conditions in Longwood, VIC. The Longwood fire has so far burnt 130,000 hectares, an area 1.6X the size of Canberra. As of 15 January, authorities say 173 homes have been destroyed with another 12 significantly damaged.
