You can’t teach kids to be gay. You can teach kids that it’s ok to be gay. Seeing LGBTQ+ people represented (on TV, in classrooms, in every walk of life) can make self acceptance easier and faster. More and happier LGBTQ people aren’t a problem - we’re a blessing! 16/16

Lies and distortions, devised or amplified by an unchecked media, the hostility of the police, Church and faith leaders, ignorance, fear of AIDS and a Government keen to gain political capital by pandering to homophobia led to Section 28. It reflected society in the 80s. It was a vote winner. 7/16

Section 28 was passed on this day in 1988. It didn’t come out of nowhere. It came from a society where 75% of people thought homosexuality was wrong. It came from a society that believed ignorance was better for children than any knowledge of lesbian or gay lives. 🧵 1/16

I’m not trans but the hostile legal and social environment facing trans people mirrors that experienced by me and other gay men in the 1980s. I struggle to understand those who lived through that era who don’t feel the parallels and the need now to stand with trans people. #TransRightsAreHumanRights

It’s much harder to hate or fear what you know. Simply by existing visibly, as a gay man or as someone living with HIV or as a trans person, we challenge stigma and hatred.
