The motion for free school travel for children in temporary accommodation was passed by Manchester City Council, campaigned for by @manchestereveningnews.co.uk. We are pleased to see the support for this motion, alongside the Council's pilot of the notification system for schools and GPs.

"We have a generation of kids living in B&Bs for long periods of time and that should be unacceptable socially." The government's target of eliminating the unlawful use of B&Bs for families with children is achievable with ambition, leadership and practical planning. 🧵4/4

The guidance is not strong enough. It needs to be more practical and enforce the basics households need to make their stay in TA bearable and workable (Fix the Five Basics campaign by @citizensuk.org @trustforlondon.bsky.social). This is not expensive and can be implemented immediately. 🧵3/4

"The lack of data prevents further scrutiny of what's going on, because you just can't find out." We welcome the interest in better data on TA and encourage the government to be more curious to gather an evidence base that would allow making good policy decisions. 🧵 2/4

The amendment to the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill that we have been campaigning for through the APPG for Households in TA was welcomed and passed in the House of Lords yesterday. We are pleased and look forward to working with the Government to ensure the notification system is implemented

Thank you to @jimmcmahon.co.uk for highlighting the stark reality of some homeless families' lives in temporary accommodation. Temporary accommodation is often unsafe, unsuitable, disruptive and harmful to children's health and educational attainment.

Thank you to The Baroness Burt of Solihull for addressing the link between domestic abuse, debt and temporary accommodation in the House of Lords. We support the call for coerced debt to be excused to help victims of domestic abuse out of the debt trap and into a permanent home.

We welcome Rachel Reeves MP's announcement of the lift of the two-child benefit cap. This is a much-needed change that will help support vulnerable families and children, and reduce the risk of homelessness for households across the country.
