.@JamesTalarico: Ken Paxton has a criminal record. I have a legislative record. For over 4 terms in the Texas House, I have gotten Democrats and Republicans to pass more than 60 bipartisan bills and I’m gonna put that record up against Paxton’s criminal record any day of the week, twice on Sunday.
James Talarico: I can’t tell you the number of people who come up to me and whisper, ‘I’m not a Democrat’, including a lot of people who voted for Trump. A lot of the president’s supporters are feeling disillusioned with this extremism and corruption that is embodied by politicians like Ken Paxton.
James Talarico: An Amazon worker recently died on a warehouse floor and management told the others: ‘Just turn around and don't look. Get back to work.’ A different world is possible. What if we invested the same resources into peace that we invest into war? What if the only hunger was for justice?
Q: Ken Paxton said requiring the Ten Commandments in public classrooms is a ‘major victory for our moral values.’ Your response? Talarico: I’m not sure if Ken Paxton is in a place to lecture us on moral values. The only thing worse than a tyrant is a tyrant who thinks they’re on a mission from God.
James Talarico: Working Texans are paying more in taxes than they did last year, and they are paying about twice what billionaires are paying. I think we should close these loopholes — and we should ensure that next time tax day rolls around, the average Texan is paying less than a billionaire.
James Talarico: Republicans have been attacking me by taking something I say about the border and cutting it off mid-sentence. I have said throughout the whole campaign that our southern border should be like our front porch. There should be a giant welcome mat out front AND a lock on the door.
James Talarico: As a millennial, I saw how military disasters like the Iraq war robbed this nation of young lives, of billions of dollars, and of our moral standing in the world. Every dollar we are spending bombing people in the Middle East is a dollar that we are not spending in our communities.
James Talarico: There was a promise made by the president during his campaign that he wasn't gonna start any more wars, and now he's started multiple wars just in the first year of his administration. I can sympathize with the disillusionment that some of the folks in the MAGA movement are feeling.
James Talarico: We’re told there’s not enough money for schools, healthcare, or veterans, but there always seems to be enough money to bomb people on the other side of the world. The president said this was going to be short-term pain, but you tell that to the parents of those fallen soldiers.
Q: What does your win signal about what voters want? James Talarico: I think people are really sick of the politics we’ve had for the last ten years. The first words out of my mouth on the campaign trail was that the real fight in this country is not left versus right — it's top versus bottom.
James Talarico: As a millennial, I saw how military disasters like the Iraq war robbed this nation of young lives, billions of dollars, and our moral standing. We are always told we don’t have enough money for schools but there’s always enough money to bomb people on the other side of the world.
Talarico: This new kind of politics is being born right here in the Lone Star State. The number of Texans who have never voted before but showed up in this election is unprecedented. The people of Texas just gave this country a little bit of hope. And a little bit of hope is a dangerous thing.
.@JamesTalarico: My grandad was a Baptist preacher who told me at an early age that we follow a barefoot rabbi who gave us two commandments: love God and love neighbor. I’m trying to love my neighbor through public policy, I’m trying to make my neighbor’s life a little easier and a little better.
