At yesterday’s House Armed Services Committee hearing, I pressed the Commander of U.S. Africa Command, General Anderson, on why this administration dismantled USAID and how that affects our regional diplomacy. The president is alienating our key allies and leaving a void for our competitors to fill.

This week, I asked the Air Force Secretary how he plans to replace the California Air National Guard’s aging F-15 fighter jet fleet. I’m proud to advocate for our servicemembers in California and I’m committed to expanding their access to this country’s best modern aircrafts.

When I was at the Pentagon as the Undersecretary of Personnel and Readiness, every promotion for every general and flag officer in the U.S. military came across my desk. Never did we ever talk about quotas for race or gender. Everything that the military does has been based on merit.

Recruiting didn’t go up because we changed the Department of Defense to the Department of War. It went up because we started investing in recruiting again, plain and simple.

It’s time to get this long overdue policy change across the finish line and pass my bill, the Duty Status Reform Act.
