Oversight is a healthy and necessary part of good governance.

Yesterday, Council passed the Transportation Utility Fee (TUF) ordinance out of committee. I didn’t take my vote lightly - and I want you to hear why. I’ll keep pushing for more progressive revenue options that don’t put the burden on working-class Portlanders to fix a structural deficit.

Good news: @councilorgreen.bsky.social, @councilormorillo.bsky.social, and I are introducing a budget package called Services First. The goal is exactly that – protect the basics that Portlanders expect us to deliver, like parks maintenance and fire rescues.

My colleagues and the Mayor suggested I wasn’t working with community on Avalos 2, which would have helped immigrant and refugee communities. My office spent all day making calls to community organizations, local leaders, and advocates who clearly told me the City needed to step up support.

I’m thankful for my colleagues who worked together through these long meetings — even against tough odds — and for everyone who’s helped advocate for a people-first budget.

But at the end of the day, we need to keep having a broader conversation about how we build systems that ask those who have the greatest financial flexibility to put in their fair share.
