It was a pleasure to reflect on the EU’s role in an ever changing world, and our responsibilities towards the next generations, at the 50th anniversary of the European University Institute in Florence. The EU is engaging globally to provide the necessary stability for peace and prosperity.

High energy prices are one of the biggest challenges for the competitiveness of the European Union. We must become more autonomous by using our clean homegrown sources of energy. We need to take immediate action to protect our citizens.

In this new reality, the EU must defend the rules-based international order. Violations of international law must not be accepted, human rights violations must not be tolerated. Freedom and human rights cannot be achieved through bombs. Only international law upholds them.

Today's EPC demonstrated the European way of doing things - through multilateralism, with the United Nations system at its heart, and in respect of our international law.

This week, I will visit our six Western Balkans partners. My visit to the region sends a clear signal: our commitment to the Western Balkans is real; and so is the opportunity of enlargement. The momentum is there. Now is the time to deliver.
