Today, after a long time, we got soaking wet again while cycling. Luckily there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. And, to quote @bicycledutch.bsky.social: "In the Netherlands, it’s not about avoiding the rain; it’s about cycling through it with a smile."

After extensive roadworks, starting in 2025, the redesign of Socrateslaan in Utrecht is nearly complete! The work has transformed an avenue dominated by cars into a greener and safer one significantly more attractive for local residents, pedestrians, and cyclists, without banning for cars.

Another lost day for business. It's a shame the city council has made it's center liveable and accessible for pedestrians and cyclists, instead of ensuring good accessibility and parking spaces for cars. That would have made it so much more profitable for entrepreneurs. 🤷‍♂️

This is bike-prioritized infrastructure. Also known as a 'fietsstraat'. Cars are welcome, but only as a guest. When temperatures reach tropical levels, Utrecht's popular swimming spots turn into large bicycle parking lots. Spontaneous, unorganized, and without bothering anyone. And the next morning, they are (almost) all gone again!

Today is Bike to Work Day in the Netherlands. But apart from that one day a year, we don't make a big deal out of it and just call it Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Because when the conditions are right, everyday can be Bike to Work Day! #BiketoWorkDay

As the timelapse of the 4-year building proces of the bike parking shows, underwater really means underwater, not just underground! Now boats are sailing over the parked bicycles!

Imagine living in a street without cars in front of the door, but benches, parked bicycles, flower boxes and exuberant greenery against the lovely facades. 😍😍

Amsterdam is home to the first underwater bike parking in the world. It's open 24/7, can house 7,000 bikes and 700 rental bikes and has a shop for maintenance and repair. Construction costs were around 60 million euros. That's cheap compared to the annual savings on healthcare costs from cycling!

Cycling on the F12, the 19 km long continuous cycle route ('doorfietsroute') connecting Utrecht with Woerden. Routes like this make it possible to cycle smoothly, safely, and comfortably between cities and villages, and make it more attractive for commuters to choose the bike over the car.

Park Oosterspoorbaan, a former railway line in Utrecht, transformed into a beautiful ribbon-shaped park. Full of nature, sports, play and exercise. But also an oasis of tranquility. And in this season, with all the colors and scents, a feast for all the senses. A piece of paradise in the city!

On the outskirts of Porto San Giorgo in Italy, the Ciclovia Adriatica crosses a bicycle bridge over the River Ete, revealing a magnificent view: on one side the clear blue waters of the Adriatic Sea, and on the other, in the distance, the snow-capped peaks of the Monti Sibillini National Park.

Last vita è bella on the Adriatic coast! During our holiday, we cycled a small part of the 'Ciclovia Adriatica', a route of over 1,300 kilometers along the east coast of Italy. The route is still under development, so conditions aren't great everywhere, but that didn't spoil the fun! 🇮🇹 🚲 🤩

The square on the right used to be a big parking lot. And their were 4 car lanes instead of 2 for public transport. Like many other cities, Utrecht was very much car-oriented. But Utrecht made some tough and bold choices and became the city many people admire today. Change is possible!

When Pont Adolphe in Luxembourg was closed to reinforce the structure so that a tram line could be laid on top, a walking and cycling bridge was suspended beneath the arch structure to minimize inconvenience. Now you can enjoy the sound of birds instead the sound traffic while crossing the bridge!

Two classes of Dutch schoolchildren on their way for a 4-day camp, some 15 kilometers from school. 3 teachers 👨‍🏫👩🏼‍🏫🧑‍🏫 4 parents 👩‍🦰👨👩🧔🏼‍♂️ 40 very happy kids 🙋🏼‍♂️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏻🧏‍♂️🧏‍♀️🧏 47 bicycles 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲 (and some cars 🚘🚙🚗 for all the luggage) The journey is as much fun as the destination!

Cycling through the snow continues to produce beautiful images. The main routes are generally well-maintained, but even on roads that haven't been gritted, cycling is still good for now.

It's dark and snowing. So no reason at all NOT to hop on our bikes for a family visit on the other side of town!

In 2025, I cycled well over 6,000 km. My bike maintenance costs were around €400 (which is exceptionally high for me). So, converted, I cycled for a little more than 6 cents per kilometer. So much for this, according to some, elitist lifestyle 😉

In the new situation, car traffic can flow freely without having to yield for cyclists and cyclists can safely and comfortably continue their way between 's Hertogenbosch and Vught (and vice versa). A win-win situation for both motorists and cyclists! 🧵 2/3

In 2021, two new cycling bridges were opened on the border between Dutch places 's Hertogenbosch and Vught. Previously, there was a level crossing intersection but with the arrival of a new turbo roundabout for car traffic, this was no longer desirable in terms of safety and traffic flow. 🧵 1/3

You don't necessarily need traffic lights and stop signs to keep traffic moving smoothly. Especially in places with low car traffic, traffic is perfectly able to regulate itself with just a few small design elements (shark's teeth, zebra crossings).

Living in Utrecht means living in a beautiful historic city, founded by the Romans 2000 years ago. Now the 4th largest city in the Netherlands, heart of the most competitive region of Europe and most cycling friendly city in the world. Need to be convinced? Just watch the video!
