My conclusion from all of this is that we need to watch a lot more pre-1915 films.

The film is clunky, melodramatic, overacted and quite sloppy in places in an apples to apples comparison with other features and epics of the period. The problem is that very very few people watch 1912-1915 features and epics. Or BOAN itself, in many cases. It's a Blue Stone of Galveston situation.

A lot (and I mean A LOT) of self-proclaimed liberals and progressives and general "not a racist bone in my body" declare that they can look past the racism of BIRTH OF A NATION to see the art because they are immune to propaganda. While parroting debunked propaganda about what the film "invented"

THE RAILWAY OF DEATH (1912) was shot in Camargue and reflects the European frenzy for westerns. The film, directed by Jean Durand, is best described as Coyote vs Roadrunner with real guns. 10/10 highly recommended, it's absolutely bonkers.

The 1900s-1910s had 1860s nostalgia HARD. The 1920s were all-in for 1880s-1900s nostalgia. Legal booze! Nobody had ever heard of a World War! After WWII, nostalgia for 1900-1913 was at its peak, before it was finally supplanted for the 1950s nostalgia craze of the 1970s.
