You can tell this Peter Lorre scene from THE MALTESE FALCON had a big influence on REN & STIMPY.

Old news, but new to me: I've always liked the Norah Jones song "Sinkin' Soon," but I've never seen the music video (directed by Ace Norton), which is exactly my kind of thing, full of bizarre puppets and eccentric stop-motion. Plus Norah in a cartoon mouse outfit.

15 2

Perfect comic timing from Tex Avery.

35 11

RIP Tom Kane, the unmistakable voice of Professor Utonium in THE POWERPUFF GIRLS.

Five years of being cancer-free! The cancer was in my tongue, so I made this tongue-related cartoon around that time to spin something funny out of the situation.

104 27

Born today in 1913: Looney Tunes genius Bob Clampett, a true wild man and artistic innovator whose work was always so, so funny.

117 27

What behooves thee, fair maiden?

40 7

Nobody knew how to cram in the sight gags like Tex Avery.

64 24

Adding onto this, it's amazing to remember that these shorts were meant to be shown in front of a movie and then never seen again. It speaks to the passion for the art form these great animators had that they packed so much love and skill into what could've been disposable.

79 28

In addition to being hilarious, I always marvel at the incredible artistry the animators packed into every frame of the old Looney Tunes shorts. All of the little character nuances, the gorgeous backgrounds, the musical accents… these things really are such treasures of cinema.

Born today in 1933: the "crazy influential" cinema queen Jayne Mansfield.

Great squiggly drawings in this 1980 Japanese cartoon about a sleepy dragon by Taku Furukawa.

45 16

No matter how many times I watch a Max Fleischer cartoon from the early '30s, I marvel at the endless flow of creativity and beautiful rubbery motion. True visual jazz (and the actual jazz on the soundtrack, courtesy of Cab Calloway in this case, doesn't hurt either!).

46 12

Beautiful cat ad from Studio Ghibli. Directed by Katsuya Kondo, animation director/character designer on films like KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE and PONYO.

25 5

It's here! Check out my new cartoon THE ADVENTURES OF JESTER JILL! If you like fourth wall-breaking cartoon slapstick, give it a look. Link in comments.

24 8

RIP Sam Kieth, creator of THE MAXX and artist on THE SANDMAN.

53 11

Don't waste your time with terrible AI fruit videos when you can watch Mickey Rooney lead an orchestra of fruits, featuring practical effects by the great George Pal.

77 31

Important info.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

75 24

I had a lot of fun writing a new article for @cartoonbrew.bsky.social about cartoon beavers throughout animation history, tying in with the release of Pixar's HOPPERS! Take a look for some great clips and history.

Good taste! I love THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT... directed by Looney Tunes animator Frank Tashlin.

If you love Red's singing voice as much as I do, you'll enjoy seeing Imogene in person, singing with Ray McKinley's band:

In honor of Tex Avery's birthday, here's a classic scene from Tex's SWING-SHIFT CINDERELLA (1945), with the beautiful Red animated by Preston Blair and voiced by Imogene Lynn.

49 22

Born today in 1908 - the brilliant Tex Avery.

39 14

Great moment from WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT? (1965).

7 1

Bugs Bunny's friends.

43 13

Crazy gag here. From 1931's SHIPWRECK, by Walter Lantz & Bill Nolan.

20 4

Clip I'd never seen of Merle Oberon, star of 1939's WUTHERING HEIGHTS, thanking the Chinese allies in WWII. From STAGE DOOR CANTEEN (1943).

10 4

I can't get enough of Emery Hawkins' animation. The squishy fluidity of his movements just bursts with personality.

68 32

I always enjoy it when Woody Woodpecker sings in an operatic voice.

41 15

I love the amount of skill and creativity that went into this 1939 Hungarian stop-motion advertisement for lightbulbs. INCANDESCENT LOVE by Gyula Macskássy & György Szénásy.

19 4

Happy 93rd birthday to Kim Novak.

Hey guys! Check out my new article for @cartoonbrew.bsky.social about the times when Tom & Jerry actually spoke! Lots of history and great clips. www.cartoonbrew.com/cartoon-stud...

Better than all the Super Bowl commercials combined.

34 8

I watched THE NAUGHTY NINETIES with Abbott & Costello for the first time the other day, and I loved this routine! Funny idea, perfectly executed.

6 3

Watching a masterpiece on Turner Classic Movies.

RIP Catherine O'Hara.

32 7

Since the Looney Tunes are coming to TCM, here's a clip from one of my all-time favorites: RABBIT HOOD (1949), directed by Chuck Jones. Is this the most thoroughly anyone has been tricked by Bugs Bunny? The moment where it sinks in is brilliantly timed.

191 92

Snowed in today. Be careful out there everybody!

13 2

The way John McLeish reads this narration in WILLOUGHBY'S MAGIC HAT (1943) cracks me up.

17 5

Scene from my Star Wars parody BIZARRE WARS.

13 4

I especially like this rare Scrappy cartoon from 1933 when they drop a bomb on Mr. Dry - the symbol of Prohibition - and then everybody gets sloshed.

11 1

It always amuses me how many cartoons there were about getting drunk made during Prohibition.

57 12

Great Bugs Bunny reference by Das EFX from "They Want EFX."

7 2

I was just watching A VERY BRADY SEQUEL and noticed Guy Moon did the music. It's striking how much the movie sounds like a FAIRLY ODDPARENTS episode.

13 4

R.I.P. Guy Moon, composer on THE FAIRLY ODDPARENTS and DANNY PHANTOM. I love that "bwwomp" reaction sound he used to do on DP.

52 28

Bugs playing both sides in this scene is so funny.

26 7

Just saw James L. Brooks' ELLA MCCAY (which I liked), so here's a nice Simpsons scene that Brooks wrote. Brooks wrote a lot of the more emotional scenes in the early Simpsons episodes.

Happy public domain day to Betty Boop! Here she is in her first appearance, the Max Fleischer cartoon DIZZY DISHES (1930). I love the wonderfully insane animation of Betty here by her creator Grim Natwick.

28 10

Happy New Year, cartoon fans!

32 6

I'm constantly impressed by the way the old Zagreb cartoons from Yugoslavia would move their characters around in ways that I've never seen and never would've thought of.

30 6

Some especially painful-looking punches here.

14 3

Merry Xmas! From Pat Ventura's GEORGE AND JUNIOR'S CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR (1995).

17 6

Even if you don't know Mae West by name, you probably know her voice. Just about any seductive woman in an old cartoon is doing an impression of her.

7 0

Redacted.

15 5

Disney's Pluto cartoons of the '40s and '50s aren't as funny as the Donald and Goofy shorts of the same period, but they have their moments, like this interesting bit from SPRINGTIME FOR PLUTO (1944).

30 11

This must be the best superhero origin story of all time.

14 5

One of the great cameos.
