Adding onto this, it's amazing to remember that these shorts were meant to be shown in front of a movie and then never seen again. It speaks to the passion for the art form these great animators had that they packed so much love and skill into what could've been disposable.

This must be the best superhero origin story of all time.

No matter how many times I watch a Max Fleischer cartoon from the early '30s, I marvel at the endless flow of creativity and beautiful rubbery motion. True visual jazz (and the actual jazz on the soundtrack, courtesy of Cab Calloway in this case, doesn't hurt either!).

In addition to being hilarious, I always marvel at the incredible artistry the animators packed into every frame of the old Looney Tunes shorts. All of the little character nuances, the gorgeous backgrounds, the musical accents… these things really are such treasures of cinema.
