Ethan Lacey fights for his life in Thailand after a devastating incident, and his family face unbearable uncertainty. I've written to the Foreign Office & am now seeking an urgent meeting with the Minister to ensure Ethan & his family receive the immediate support they need.

Today at @commonshealth.bsky.social, I asked the Minister whether the slow rollout of weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro risks creating a two-tier system. Those who can afford private treatment can access it now, while others are left waiting for the NHS.

With the Health Bill focused on reducing health inequalities, I asked @thekingsfund.bsky.social CEO Sarah about the proposals at @commonshealth.bsky.social.

Following the 2nd reading of the Health Bill, we put patient experience and health outcomes in the spotlight at the Health and Social Care Committee this week. I asked Health Foundation’s, Hugh, what it really means for the future of care.

My heart goes out to the family of Henry Nowak, a young life with so much ahead, taken far too soon in a horrific murder. His family deserve answers. With the Independent Office for Police Conduct investigating, we must now see a full, transparent conclusion to what happened.

In yesterday’s Health Bill debate, I welcomed localising care, thanks to investment in Stockland Green Health Centre. As the Bill progresses, we must ensure patients’ voices are strengthened, not sidelined, and local representation stays at the heart of decision-making.

A £30m government investment to tackle crime on our high streets is hugely welcome. Erdington’s Operation Fearless showed that when we invest and work together, we can tackle these challenges and make a difference. I’ll keep pushing to make our high streets safer for everyone.

At the Health and Social Care Committee, we heard from Institute for Government's Stuart Hoddinott on the reorganisation of ICBs as part of the NHS transition. The process appears chaotic, with serious uncertainty around future responsibilities, including SEND.

The mystery of £5m from a crypto billionaire, £1.5m from reality TV and a £1.4m Surrey mansion. Just declare it, Nigel! Clacton deserves an MP who shows up. At least I’ve lived in my constituency for nearly 40 years, I don’t make millions, but I always make time.

We need more women putting themselves forward for leadership, which is why it’s great to see Cllr Nicky Brennan leading Birmingham Labour, the city’s only female political group leader. Too many women are put off by abuse & intimidation in public life. That must be alway challenged!

1 0

Women make up 51% of Birmingham’s population, yet it’s disappointing to see fewer women councillors representing our communities. Labour remains the most gender-balanced group on the council. Meanwhile, Reform’s is only 30% women, and the Conservatives trail with a shocking 14%.

Leadership isn’t easy. Sometimes it means making difficult decisions that won’t always be popular. In Birmingham, the electorate have spoken. Labour is neither the largest party nor in majority control. Meanwhile, Reform, now the largest party, chooses to hide in opposition.

14 years of Tory austerity crippled our community. Now, this Labour government is delivering: ✅ £20m Pride in Place for Kingstanding ✅ Nearly £1m for Operation Fearless in Erdington ✅ £640m+ boost for Birmingham Labour invests. Tories cut. The difference is clear.

We lost some brilliant, experienced councillors and candidates, but that’s democracy. The bin strikes have dragged on for far too long. Reform must step up and help sort this mess out, not hide behind slogans in opposition. Birmingham deserves leadership, not excuses.

Reform is the largest party in Birmingham, but instead of leading, they hide in opposition. That’s not leadership. That’s running scared. Councillors rushed from bed, acting like MPs, one thinking council funds DJs. No wonder they won't step up. Birmingham deserves better.

The local elections were devastating. We lost outstanding councillors and candidates. On the doorstep, voters repeatedly told us the same thing, national issues and the party leadership meant they could no longer vote Labour. We now need an orderly transition to new leadership.

Last week, I tabled an amendment to the Courts and Tribunals Bill calling for 12 and 36 month reviews of changes to jury trials. These reviews would assess impacts on ethnic minorities and white individuals from low-income households. Watch in full 👇🏿 youtu.be/V0plgsxdgvc

At last week's General Debate on Allied Health Professionals, I raised concerns about declining numbers and the urgent need to grow the workforce. AHPs are vital to the NHS, the third-largest clinical workforce - delivering essential diagnostic, therapeutic and support services.

This is a hateful, cowardly act with no place in our community. No one should feel fear because of who they are or their belief. Following racist vandalism at Jami Community & Education Centre, I called a meeting and am working with the council and police to ensure swift action.

A busy day on Erdington High Street with Acting Chief Constable Scott Green, WM Police & Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster. Hearing firsthand from businesses about Operation Fearless and the challenges that remain. Good to see Erdington remain a key focus in the fight against crime and ASB.

3 1

The data is in - crime is down around Erdington High Street. 📉 Operation Fearless is delivering and the best part, it's being sustained. After securing nearly a million pounds, concentrated policing and intervention is making a real difference. 👮 We'll continue to build!

You can’t bomb your way to victory in the Middle East, this ends with a negotiated agreement, full stop!!! But if Farage and Badenoch had their way, Britain would be stuck in the middle of it, with British taxpayers footing the bill. We need diplomacy, not an endless war.

🚨 BREAKING: Two new Best Start School-Based Nurseries are coming to Castle Vale! I’m proud to share that Chivenor Primary and Pegasus Primary will receive investment for NEW Best Start School-Based Nurseries. I’ll continue fighting for the investment our communities deserve.

It was a privilege to join many of you for Iftar during Ramadan. 🌙✨ As Eid begins, I am wishing everyone celebrating across Erdington, Kingstanding, Castle Vale, and South Oscott a joyful and peaceful few days. Eid Mubarak to you and your family.

At @commonshealth.bsky.social, we heard from Salford Council's DSO, Dr Dawn Fenton, on the policy changes needed so statutory bodies can meet their responsibilities for children with SEND. A clear push for a national framework to enable joint working that would secure positive outcomes.

At @commonshealth.bsky.social, we heard from the Chief Executive of @hctnhs.bsky.social regarding the health aspects of Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). He described a system that, in practice, nobody fully understands how to navigate, highlighting the urgent need for change.

Warwickshire County Council isn’t just a local story - it’s a warning. No experience in charge. Confidential information leaked. Behaviour towards statutory bodies. It’s just chaos, chaos, chaos with Reform. Don’t let them do to Britain what they’re doing to Warwickshire.

I’ve always said the only way to resolve the Birmingham bin dispute is by getting around the table and negotiating. We cannot continue with a system where women council workers are paid less than male colleagues, but nor should anyone lose pay. A year on, it needs a resolution.

Yesterday on BBC Politics Midlands I said the Government was reviewing the energy situation and would act when needed. Today the PM announced emergency support: action against firms exploiting the crisis, £53m for heating oil costs, and the energy price cap drop by £117 from April.

Corridor care isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s damaging. The stress, overcrowding, and exhaustion of waiting for hours in a hallway takes a heavy toll. At @commonshealth.bsky.social, RCEM's President Ian Higginson revealed worrying stats from a survey on the impact this is having on doctors.

1 0

At the @commonshealth.bsky.social, The RCN’s Nicola Ranger highlighted the toll corridor care is taking on nurses. As a former nurse, I know the pride we feel in caring for others. But with no beds and patients stuck in hallways, that pride is being crushed. This must be fixed, urgently!

Harold Wilson refused to drag Britain into Vietnam, and history proved him right. Now Keir Starmer is doing the same. National interest first. Always. 🇬🇧

3 1

I'm with with Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Iran! Tony Blair’s government achieved great things, introducing the minimum wage, roll out of Sure Start, but Iraq left a dark shadow that can never be ignored. We must learn from the past to guide our present and future.

Always a pleasure meeting residents at my coffee mornings, hearing their concerns and priorities for the area. Last week we discussed litter, issues with HMOs and gas canisters left on the street. We're working together to tackle these problems and improve our community!

Honoured to host #InternationalWomensDay in Erdington and hear the powerful journeys of inspiring local women. This year’s theme Give to Gain reminds us that when we invest in women’s safety, rights and leadership, we build stronger communities for everyone.

Spoke at the Future of Palliative Care debate, highlighting challenges facing hospices like John Taylor in Erdington. The truth is, relying on donations is unsustainable. We need a real strategy so everyone can live, and die, with dignity. Watch in full: youtu.be/pXDTHwbgXWM

Local councillors are the bedrock of our communities, local voices tackling local issues. Waseem Zaffar was one of the best, a tireless advocate for constituents, taken far too soon. A huge loss to Birmingham. I called for a debate to honour the work of councillors like Waseem.

Today is #WorldBookDay, a chance to share a book close to my heart 📚 The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been a bedtime favourite as a mother & grandmother, first with my children, now my grandchildren 🐛 Books help us share imagination, dreams & stories. Happy World Book Day!

Britain must always put its people first - no one, not even Trump, should tell us otherwise. The Prime Minister is right to stand up to Trump and defend our citizens and our interests.

1 0

This morning on @jeremyvine.bsky.social I talked about how important it is to learn the lessons of Iraq. The Prime Minister is right not to be dragged into another war, and to stand up to Trump’s pressure on the Middle East.

At the @commonshealth.bsky.social inquiry, I drew on 25 years as a nurse. It's shocking that despite decades on the frontline, guidance for health professionals on obesity & weight management still seems so lacking. This must change - right across the health service.

3 0

At the @commonshealth.bsky.social inquiry (audio only) on food & weight management, I asked Dr Munro Stewart of @rcgp, if doctors are seeing obese patients daily, why isn’t this being treated as a priority? Quality care must include real support for those struggling with weight management.
