Apparently my blueberry pie wasn't good enough to save ferry funding. Republicans zeroed out $40M in grants communities rely on to get to work, school, the doctor, and the mainland. That's a *sliver* of the federal budget. My amendment would've restored funding. I’ll keep fighting to get it back.
Republicans keep saying there isn’t enough money for clean water, museums, climate science, public lands, or basic services. But somehow there's always more money for Trump’s pet projects. This is a choice: Trump’s ego over the public interest. Trump’s vanity over the needs of working families.
Trump’s incompetence nearly destroyed the Kennedy Center. Now he wants to “transfer it back to Congress”!?!? First: What the hell does THAT mean? Second: We need answers on how the Center will be run moving forward (and Congress’s oversight role). My amendment simply called for more transparency.
They don’t call it “breaking bread” for nothing! Today’s markup lunch: Idaho fries from Rep. Simpson + my homemade wild Maine blueberry pies (leave it to a Mainer to whip up 8 pies in a morning!). Maybe after this we can come back to the table and make this funding bill bipartisan! One can hope.
One of my amendments was simple: NO TRUMP ARCH! Most Americans oppose it. Veterans groups oppose it. It’s a huge waste of taxpayer money. Republicans say there’s no funding in the bill for an arch anyway. You think Trump cares about Congressional approval!? They can't stand up to him on ANYTHING!
Chilly ferry ride! Heading to DC for a busy week: 🔴War Powers Resolution to rein in Trump’s illegal war (Republicans can’t run away this time!) 🔴 Interior + Environment markup, where we’ll fight Trump’s looting of NPS for his vanity projects 🔴 More lies and craziness, no doubt Let’s get to work.
BIG fight ahead on EPA funding and the agency’s ridiculous rollbacks on toxic chemicals. PFAS in drinking water. Delayed compliance on vehicle emissions and pollution from coal-fired plants. Postponing regulations on efficient refrigerators. Republicans want to give the green light to ALL of it.
Trump and his vanity projects are completely out of control. This week, we learned he’s raiding NPS entrance fee revenue to help pay for his tacky vanity projects around DC. Meanwhile, parks like Acadia are facing real maintenance backlogs, which is exactly what that money is supposed to help fix.
On Rachel Carson’s birthday, it’s important to not only honor her extraordinary legacy, but to remember that many of the battles she was fighting are still being fought today—especially around chemicals in our environment. Happy Birthday, Rachel. May your genius and vision continue to guide us.
While families struggle to afford groceries, gas, and health care, Trump wants the American taxpayers to bankroll his gilded ballroom and an absurd Arch. He's also turning the White House lawn into something straight out of "Idiocracy" to celebrate his birthday with a UFC match. I mean, really?
What a shitshow in DC this week! The good news: The Senate failed to pass a reconciliation bill that would’ve given MORE money to ICE—in defiance over Trump’s crazy demand that it include a $1.776 BILLION slush fund for his cronies (including J6 insurrectionists). 1776? Seriously? So gross. (1/2)
Last year, the Admin illegally terminated thousands of grants at the NEA and NEH—agencies that help generate more than $1 TRILLION in economic activity. These cuts don’t just silence voices and stymie creators. They erase the spaces where healing, connection, and community happen. It’s just WRONG!
Apparently Republicans are fine with slashing the EPA by 20%, cutting water infrastructure funding, and eliminating cultural programs in our communities. As long as Trump gets his ridiculous ballroom and triumphal arch! This isn’t “fiscal responsibility.” It’s partisan BS—and completely tone-deaf.
The Home Energy Rebates program helped hundreds of Mainers install heat pumps—dramatically reducing their energy bills. The Admin froze it. @wassermanschultz.house.gov offered an amendment stipulating that DOE either release the funds, or come to our committee and explain *why* they remain frozen.
Maine electricity prices are up 20% since last year. Instead of helping families, the Admin is using taxpayer $ to pay companies to abandon wind projects and redirect investments to LNG exports. Enough with the dirty deals! Congress has the power of the purse. Why do Republicans REFUSE to use it?
This shouldn't be controversial, but here we are… debating in the FY27 Commerce, Justice, Science bill whether taxpayer dollars should be used to spy on, investigate, or intimidate Americans for exercising their First Amendment rights. (I agree with @pocan.house.gov: They absolutely should not.)
HOW IT STARTED: "On day one, we will end inflation and make America affordable again, to bring down the prices of all goods.” — Donald Trump, August 2024 HOW IT'S GOING: Inflation just hit a three-year high, thanks to Trump’s illegal war in Iran—the kind he promised never to start (another lie).
Olivia and her family fled an awful situation in the DRC. They’ve done everything right—working, studying, trying to live their lives free of fear. Like so many others, they got caught up in a broken immigration system. I'm thrilled she'll be coming home to Maine and reunited with her loved ones.
It’s so rare to get to share some good news. But I'm overwhelmed with joy to share that Olivia Andre WILL BE released from Dilley! A judge just signed the order today. ICE must release Olivia without delay so she can be reunited with her family and begin to heal where she belongs: at home in Maine.
I met with some protestors outside the Dilley ICE facility, where families and children are being held for months on end. As this proud vet said, this is NOT ok. It's NOT what we stand for as Americans. It's NOT how our taxpayer dollars should be spent. Shut. It. Down. And release the families!
Just got out of our tour of Dilley. As always, they tried very hard to cover up the horrible conditions. But you could see how awful it is. I *did* get to meet with Olivia, a 19-year-old from Maine. All she wants is to come home, be with her family, and eat ice cream while she watches the sunset.
On my way to conduct an oversight visit of Dilley—and to meet with Olivia, a constituent who’s been detained there since November and is facing some very serious health challenges. My goal is to get Olivia out as soon as possible. Because no one deserves to be ripped from their family like this.
Headed to Texas for an oversight visit of Dilley, where Mainer Olivia Andre and many others are being held under horrible conditions. I have a folder of photos and letters from loved ones to share with Olivia—as well as documentation on our efforts to bring her home. I hope they lift her spirits.
Last week the Energy + Commerce Committee held a hearing on my bipartisan, bicameral Food Date Labeling Act, which would make food expiration labels less confusing and standardize how companies phrase date labels. This commonsense change would dramatically reduce food waste AND save families money.
Fishing and lobstering are central to Maine’s economy. But seafood + aquaculture are often left out of vital USDA programs. I was proud to support a Farm Bill amendment to make USDA’s Office of Seafood permanent, ensuring fishermen + seafood producers can access the same resources farmers rely on.
The Administration talks a big game about supporting regenerative agriculture. So why are they slashing the very programs that support those practices? This isn’t some kind of “woke agenda.” It’s what farming in 2026 looks like as farmers grapple with the impacts of climate change and rising costs.
In his address yesterday, King Charles III underscored a basic truth: no one who holds great power should be above the system they govern. That principle built this country. I hope that message isn’t lost on anyone here, though it’ll go over the head of the person who needs to hear it most, I fear.
🧵 Today is Zarah’s 15th birthday. Her family has been stuck at Camp As Sayliyah in Qatar for over a year—along with 1000 fellow Afghans who aided our military during the war in Afghanistan. Trump is giving them a choice: Move to the DRC, or go back to Afghanistan and live under Taliban rule. (1/3)
Teri's story broke my heart. She lost her husband to cancer after spraying RoundUp on their farm for 40+ years. Bayer has paid ~$10 BILLION to settle RoundUp lawsuits—and just set aside another ~$7 billion for future cases. You don't pay that kind of money because there's nothing to worry about.
I’ve been an organic farmer for decades. I can tell you this: We DON'T need toxic chemicals like glyphosate to grow food. Rep. Massie and I have an amendment to strip the pesticide liability shield from the Farm Bill and allow states + communities to warn citizens about the dangers of glyphosate.
🧵 So grateful to @msrachelforlittles.bsky.social, as well as local +national media, for sharing Olivia's story. My concerns about her detention have only grown more urgent. She is a 19-year-old student who has reportedly lost a dangerous amount of weight—and whose mental health has deteriorated.
Arlington National Cemetery is hallowed ground. More than 400,000 servicemembers and their loved ones are buried there. Yet Trump is insisting on building his massive arch within direct sight of this sacred place. Vets + military families have expressed deep concerns—and sued to stop construction.
16 years ago today, the Deepwater Horizon disaster killed 11 workers and devastated the Gulf. DOI wants to recombine bureaus that were split up after investigations exposed failed oversight, while rolling back safeguards put in place after the disaster—jeopardizing worker safety + the environment.
🧵 Olivia Andre remains in ICE custody at Dilley, despite her mother and siblings—who were detained with her—having already been released. ICE has failed to provide a clear written explanation for why Olivia continues to be detained. This lack of transparency is unacceptable and indefensible. (1/4)
Republicans love to talk about “living within our means” when it comes to spending—except for the Pentagon, whose budget they want to increase by *40%*. Meanwhile, their cuts to the Forest Service are having a huge impact on research + wildfire management. The damage they’re doing is incalculable.
Democrats tried to bring another War Powers Resolution to the floor. Republicans immediately blocked it. Americans are fed up with this Republican Congress. The’ve given all of our power to Trump, who now has us engaged in a stupid war no one asked for. Killing in OUR name using YOUR tax dollars.
“A whole civilization will die tonight.” Read it again—and let it sink in. Trump is threatening war crimes against a country of 90 million people. This isn’t “bluster" or “Trump being Trump.” It sure as hell isn’t “the art of the deal.” It’s a threat of genocide from a damaged and dangerous man.
Lawrence O’Donnell and I discussed why Trump’s Cabinet must invoke the 25th Amendment. Republicans and his supporters can't keep brushing off these unhinged comments as "just Trump being Trump." He's doing irreparable damage to our country—and the world. Those who don't speak up are complicit.
