Great Greed often felt aimed at welcoming first-time adventurers with easy-to-learn RPG mechanics, automatic and manual saves, and there was even a light walkthrough in the manual. A friendly, portable, otherworldly quest with a recipe for an adventure with multiple toppings, er, endings!

Promising "Myth, Magic and Mirth", Tangled Tales strove to deliver on those points with plenty of adventure, unserious NPCs to aid in puzzle solving, and less emphasis on combat and more on actually completing quests. An interesting side quest by Origin from their RPG archive!

Legends of Murder: Volume One - Stonedale Castle (1989) by James Schmalz was an RPG murder mystery for DOS PCs. Wait! Murder you say? Indeed, for the king lies dead and you, as a famous Inspector, must explore the castle, talk to NPCs, find clues, and discover his killer! (an it's elementary thread)

Oni Chronicles: Genesis (1990) is an RPG on the Nintendo Game Boy by Winkysoft and Pandora Box. As a young warrior, you are soon drawn into a secret war against the Yokai that have destroyed your village, eventually awakening a secret power within! (an awaken your inner self thread)

Tangled Tales is much like an adventure game with RPG elements and turn-based combat thrown in for a bit of flavor It also made things more interesting with its menagerie of colorful NPCs. And true to its title, fairy tale cameos mix things up for a bit of humor and adventure.

Telenet's RPG stood out in making use of the CD format enabling voiced, anime-styled cutscenes to punctuate key moments with a solid soundtrack. For the time, it was the kind of bleeding edge multimedia that aimed to immerse players even deeper into the game's atmosphere, wowing audiences.

The game received a mixed batch of reviews with praise for its gameplay while noting rough edges like the awkward dialog. There was plenty to grind through, with tons of beasties (though not too much variety!) to blast into fleshy puddles and a skeleton of a story. You could also save anywhere!

Encounters were more in your face in this chapter, but unlike the first game, it came with a text file filled with hints on how to solve it (if not how to survive some of the more crushing surprises!) continuing to stand out as a murder mystery series that also spoke RPG.

Requiem of Hell (2004) was an action RPG for the N-Gage by Digital Red. Sidetalkin'? Pfft! Let's go sidequestin! The wicked Dalu has come from Hell, killing nearly everyone and spreading evil.
