It was the first game in their Legend of Heroes series but also the sixth game in Nihon Falcom's long-running Dragon Slayer series that began in 1984 on Japanese PCs like the PC-88 and the MSX with an innovative title that became an influential and iconic ancestor of the action RPG genre in Japan.

The game received a mixed batch of reviews with praise for its gameplay while noting rough edges like the awkward dialog. There was plenty to grind through, with tons of beasties (though not too much variety!) to blast into fleshy puddles and a skeleton of a story. You could also save anywhere!

Localization house, Working Designs, brought Cosmic Fantasy 2 over to North America in 1992 making it the first in its series to do go beyond Japan. They also tweaked the game's difficulty (apparently making enemies a bit harder) and edited a few scenes from the original.

It was also published as part of Softdisk's "Big Blue Disk" monthly series which had also distributed a few of John Carmack's (of id Software fame) early CRPGs. A creative use of disk media in the 80s and early 90s, a "disk magazine" was a neat way to get apps and games in your mail!

Characters will also join up (and have the annoying habit of leaving you whenever the plot felt like it) during your adventure. Combat was fairly orthodox (and happened a lot), but also had the nice feature of letting players pick whoever you wanted to act out of sequence.

Mighty Final Fight (1993) | beat 'em up | NES | Capcom Capcom's hit beat 'em up from 1989, Final Fight, punched its way into an unexpected, chibi-sized weight class on the NES! Like its arcade roots, players could kick, punch, and suplex their way through Metro City, now with RPG-like leveling.

Legends of Murder: Volume One - Stonedale Castle (1989) by James Schmalz was an RPG murder mystery for DOS PCs. Wait! Murder you say? Indeed, for the king lies dead and you, as a famous Inspector, must explore the castle, talk to NPCs, find clues, and discover his killer! (an it's elementary thread)

Shadowrun (1994) | RPG | Sega Genesis | BlueSky Software There are a few ways to make creds in this adaptation of FASA's spells and cyberpunk world of 2058. You could check the local fixers for various contracts. Or use a public jack to subtly crack deadly ICE in cyberspace for sweet paydata!

Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II (1985) | action RPG | PC platforms | Nihon Falcom Falcom's revolutionary action RPG featured an adventure packed with features like a unique skill system and a vast, underground world to explore. It also received many ports such as a slight glow up on the PC-98 in 1995!

Working Designs' reputation for injecting pop culture references into their localizations turned certain moments into time capsules that didn't quite age well. "Unhacked" versions of this and other titles are even floating around today undoing their gameplay changes (but not the translation ones).
