Mostly a solo adventure, from time to time an NPC may tag along and give you advice (and leave all of the fighting to you!). Outside of its simple, button-controlled combat, it followed a basic, easy-to-follow formula for RPGs keeping things simple and familiar as you quest to save the world.

Gauntlet IV (1993) | dungeon crawler | Sega Genesis | M2 M2 refreshed Gauntlet's iconic top-down dungeons in the 90s featuring modes like an RPG-flavored quest with gear to buy and XP to earn. Fresh tunes by Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata also accompanied brave players on their adventure!

Great Greed often felt aimed at welcoming first-time adventurers with easy-to-learn RPG mechanics, automatic and manual saves, and there was even a light walkthrough in the manual. A friendly, portable, otherworldly quest with a recipe for an adventure with multiple toppings, er, endings!

Great Greed (1992) by Namco was an RPG released for the Nintendo Game Boy with some of the greatest NPC names ever put in a cartridge. Helping to check acid rain levels, you are suddenly whisked away by magic to another world where you must battle the evil Bio-Hazard Harry! (a shortcake thread)

The combat system may look turn-based but moves in real time. Mashing the A button attacks and the B button dodges. Spells can also be assigned to the D-pad. Plenty of random encounters awaited and all of the beasties are as creatively named as the NPCs. Is your stomach growling...or is that mine???

Characters will also join up (and have the annoying habit of leaving you whenever the plot felt like it) during your adventure. Combat was fairly orthodox (and happened a lot), but also had the nice feature of letting players pick whoever you wanted to act out of sequence.

Requiem's bold effort did its best to emulate the kind of RPG experience that PC players took for granted. Though it didn't set the world aflame the way its inspiration did, it managed to work with what it had to deliver a fascinating slice of dungeon crawling to Nokia's ambitious handheld.

Arsys would continue to push their poly talents with a number of titles after Wibarm such as 1988's Star Cruiser which also debuted on the PC-88 in Japan and was later ported to other systems like the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1990, preceding Star Fox, taking players into a 3D space sandbox!

Broderbund Software ported Wibarm for MS-DOS machines beyond Japan in 1989, tweaking the graphics among other things such as the story crawl (the original Wibarm had a mix of English and Japanese text), though sound took a hit.

Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II (1985) | action RPG | PC platforms | Nihon Falcom Falcom's revolutionary action RPG featured an adventure packed with features like a unique skill system and a vast, underground world to explore. It also received many ports such as a slight glow up on the PC-98 in 1995!
