Mostly a solo adventure, from time to time an NPC may tag along and give you advice (and leave all of the fighting to you!). Outside of its simple, button-controlled combat, it followed a basic, easy-to-follow formula for RPGs keeping things simple and familiar as you quest to save the world.

Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara (1996) | beat 'em up with RPG elements | arcade | Capcom Capcom's sequel to 1994's Tower of Doom continued D&D's arcade journey, mining its monster menagerie for memorable encounters including an optional, quarter devouring fight against a vicious red dragon!

Wibarm mixed 2D action and 3D exploration. Defeating enemies earned stat improvements (Ability and Mental), different enemies were vulnerable to different weapons, and players were free to explore and leave areas if they were unprepared. You could even 'see' encounters and use an automap!

Stardust Crusaders with aishsha created an unofficial English patch and released it in 2015. Originally titled Kininkou Maroku Oni, this portable adventure was a straightforward, bare bones RPG to scratch that dungeon crawling itch.

Gauntlet II (1986) | dungeon crawler | arcade | Atari Games A year later, Atari delivered even more dungeons with a sequel! Players could now choose the same character (party of Wizards anyone?), introduced new maps with features like invisible walls, and still reminded you not to shoot the food.

Legends of Murder Vol 2: Grey Haven (1991) by James Schmalz was a CRPG for DOS PCs. While not a direct sequel to the first game, it was once more set in the same world where you, as a famous Inspector, are confronted with a new, deadly case at a prestigious school! (a battle detective thread)

Tangled Tales felt aimed at CRPG newcomers or those tired of dealing with crunch. Stats were described with words, there were no levels (or classes), finishing tasks for Eldritch allowed you to upgrade your stats (one at a time), and the game was heavy on the adventure puzzles.

Requiem's bold effort did its best to emulate the kind of RPG experience that PC players took for granted. Though it didn't set the world aflame the way its inspiration did, it managed to work with what it had to deliver a fascinating slice of dungeon crawling to Nokia's ambitious handheld.

It was also took advantage of the PS1's hardware as the first BoF to use 3D landscapes with 2D sprites. Story elements were often told in-game alongside puzzles, mini-games like an improved fishing system, and even developing a fairy village later on among other surprises.

It was also published as part of Softdisk's "Big Blue Disk" monthly series which had also distributed a few of John Carmack's (of id Software fame) early CRPGs. A creative use of disk media in the 80s and early 90s, a "disk magazine" was a neat way to get apps and games in your mail!
