PoPoLoCrois Monogatari (1996) | RPG | Sony PlayStation | G-artists and Sugar & Rockets Adapting Yohsuke Tamori's manga series, you take on the role of the courageous Prince Pietro in a quest to take back his father's stolen crown as the first of many adventures filled with fantasy and friendship.

Its ingredients also featured an environmental theme. Like a Captain Planet baddie, Bio-Hazard Harry (Bio-Haz in the game) is seeking to pollute the Kingdom of Greene. During your quest, you'll also deal with things like exposing a corrupt politician and journey to places like the Empire of Sushi!

Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II (1985) | action RPG | PC platforms | Nihon Falcom Falcom's revolutionary action RPG featured an adventure packed with features like a unique skill system and a vast, underground world to explore. It also received many ports such as a slight glow up on the PC-98 in 1995!

Despite sticking to the basics, it made the most of them with plenty of NPCs to talk to, charming graphics in exploration and combat, and a quest with unusual characters and monsters inspired by Japanese folklore. You only had one character to focus on and, of course, quite a bit of grinding ahead!

You were also the Guy Ritchie version of a medieval Sherlock Holmes. Word descriptions for stats replaced crunch, combat was turn-based text, and leveling toughened you up. Death was also pretty forgiving when you didn't die, just kind of broke away to go at it again (hopefully with better luck).

Breath of Fire III powered through the PlayStation in taking advantage of its hardware while keeping much of its familiar formula grounded. For some, BoF3 was a solid entry despite Capcom playing it somewhat safe. But for other dragon fans, it became another memorable, fire-breathing classic!

Wibarm mixed 2D action and 3D exploration. Defeating enemies earned stat improvements (Ability and Mental), different enemies were vulnerable to different weapons, and players were free to explore and leave areas if they were unprepared. You could even 'see' encounters and use an automap!

It was the first game in their Legend of Heroes series but also the sixth game in Nihon Falcom's long-running Dragon Slayer series that began in 1984 on Japanese PCs like the PC-88 and the MSX with an innovative title that became an influential and iconic ancestor of the action RPG genre in Japan.

Despite the CD-ROM format, the port's graphics still leaned into the utilitarian, but functional, look of the PC version. It hit the usual turn-based points along with a few neat ideas such as building your own spell lists via NPCs to the puzzle-like nature of some of its dungeons and boss battles.

Legend of Heroes' quest spanned multiple chapters filled with plenty of grind-filled leveling, strange twists, and traditional turn-based gameplay taking you on a grand adventure. A neat gem of an RPG filled with brutal beasties along with sweet and sour ear candy, especially for the TG-16 CD crowd!
