Arsys would continue to push their poly talents with a number of titles after Wibarm such as 1988's Star Cruiser which also debuted on the PC-88 in Japan and was later ported to other systems like the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1990, preceding Star Fox, taking players into a 3D space sandbox!

It was published by Softdisk as part of their "disk magazine" offering which was popular back in the 80s and early 90s. Even John Carmack of id fame would publish a few of his RPGs through it at one point before introducing everyone to Blazkowicz' Nazi-stomping action and multi-story cyberdemons.

Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes (1989) is a turn-based RPG by Nihon Falcom that debuted on Japanese PCs and later ported to systems like the TurboGrafx-16 CD. As a prince whose kingdom was wrongfully usurped by a greedy baron, you must find allies and take revenge! (a get my throne back thread)

Legacy gave players a top-down screen and a HUGE block in the center to display quest-important stuff found along the way. NPCs weren't clearly marked - you kind of had to wander until you "found" their invisible pixels. Same with items using the search command to scour areas for clues and items.

Despite sticking to the basics, it made the most of them with plenty of NPCs to talk to, charming graphics in exploration and combat, and a quest with unusual characters and monsters inspired by Japanese folklore. You only had one character to focus on and, of course, quite a bit of grinding ahead!

As for James Schmalz, the indie dev that created the Legends of Murder series, he continued to make games years afterwards eventually founding Digital Extremes who worked on such memorable titles such as Unreal Tournament with Epic to building the space ninja fashion paradise of Warframe!

Small, compact areas filled with monsters and obstacles make up the quest, leveling helps to bump your stats (attack, armor, and health), and there are even NPCs, weapons, and health saving food to be found. You even have magic that improves with use. As you level, you also unlock additional spells.

You were also the Guy Ritchie version of a medieval Sherlock Holmes. Word descriptions for stats replaced crunch, combat was turn-based text, and leveling toughened you up. Death was also pretty forgiving when you didn't die, just kind of broke away to go at it again (hopefully with better luck).

Tangled Tales is much like an adventure game with RPG elements and turn-based combat thrown in for a bit of flavor It also made things more interesting with its menagerie of colorful NPCs. And true to its title, fairy tale cameos mix things up for a bit of humor and adventure.

Legends of Murder Vol 2: Grey Haven (1991) by James Schmalz was a CRPG for DOS PCs. While not a direct sequel to the first game, it was once more set in the same world where you, as a famous Inspector, are confronted with a new, deadly case at a prestigious school! (a battle detective thread)
