Despite the CD-ROM format, the port's graphics still leaned into the utilitarian, but functional, look of the PC version. It hit the usual turn-based points along with a few neat ideas such as building your own spell lists via NPCs to the puzzle-like nature of some of its dungeons and boss battles.

Tangled Tales is much like an adventure game with RPG elements and turn-based combat thrown in for a bit of flavor It also made things more interesting with its menagerie of colorful NPCs. And true to its title, fairy tale cameos mix things up for a bit of humor and adventure.

Legends was fairly obscure like a lot of Softdisk's diskmag games but it was a unique take on the CRPG formula with its murder mystery blend. At the end, you didn't necessarily need insane levels or bleeding edge gear and spells, just an itch for pixel hunting and puzzle solving.

Amulets & Armor (1997) | action RPG | PC platforms | United Software Artists and Exiguus Entertainment Envisioned as an MMO for BBSes, it later shifted to a single player experience. But Issues limited its run to only 100 copies, revived years later as a free download by one of its programmers!

Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II (1985) | action RPG | PC platforms | Nihon Falcom Falcom's revolutionary action RPG featured an adventure packed with features like a unique skill system and a vast, underground world to explore. It also received many ports such as a slight glow up on the PC-98 in 1995!

Breath of Fire III (1997) by Capcom was an RPG for the Sony PlayStation. In a world where dragons are long extinct, a baby dragon has been discovered!
