Vagrant Story (2000) | action RPG | Sony PlayStation | Square Lea Monde's haunted depths hid many dangers that tested its sophisticated combat system. Players could swap gear in mid-combat to meet the most current challenge, target individual body parts, and even craft (and name) their own gear!

It was also took advantage of the PS1's hardware as the first BoF to use 3D landscapes with 2D sprites. Story elements were often told in-game alongside puzzles, mini-games like an improved fishing system, and even developing a fairy village later on among other surprises.

Other neat features included how if you ran away from enemies, their encounter icon appears in the field to try and avoid it (and some areas already had enemies that were visible). Or how when you defeat a chapter's big baddie, the region they terrorized would suddenly be free of ALL monsters.

It was the first game in their Legend of Heroes series but also the sixth game in Nihon Falcom's long-running Dragon Slayer series that began in 1984 on Japanese PCs like the PC-88 and the MSX with an innovative title that became an influential and iconic ancestor of the action RPG genre in Japan.

Combat was staunchly traditionalist in sticking to what worked before, improving it with small tweaks while embellishing its presentation with fancy effects. It also didn't transition to a special backdrop or screen - if you ran into an enemy in a hallway, you fought in that hallway!

The game received a mixed batch of reviews with praise for its gameplay while noting rough edges like the awkward dialog. There was plenty to grind through, with tons of beasties (though not too much variety!) to blast into fleshy puddles and a skeleton of a story. You could also save anywhere!

Combat was turn-based and didn't award experience (only gold). Fortunately, death isn't the end as Eldritch will bring you back in case that happens with a slight scolding. Getting hurt in combat, like being bruised, can even affect your stats like lowering my Charisma to Offensive. Yikes.

It also wouldn't be a BoF without dragons! And here, BoF3 introduced a new system with "dragon genes". Once you awaken to your power, you would eventually collect different "genes" and mix them in combos to unlock new forms to change into (just make sure no one is standing next to you!).
