it works, the new renderer is bug free! to catch folks up on the experiment, this is a zero polygon renderer which uses a heightmap raycaster similar to comanche. it's a single pass with terrain + n bookended pairs of layered geometry, so you can do overlaps.

i am refactoring to use precomputed colors. i'm not sure exactly how haze will work yet, but i think there's a pretty significant speed boost from this.

i also wanted to at least try doing screen space dithered shadows. i you could finesse this various ways, but this is a good indication of what it might feel like. i like the brightness and cleanliness of it. the light feels good but the volumes suffer, i think.

i'm working on getting the new renderer to match the tuning set for the old renderer now. this handles color differently, at present- it's all precomputed + bitwise math. i'm going to explore haze (or hazeless looks) with this, but if i'm not content i'll go back to more on-the-fly color.

i maybe found a hazeless tuning set i like. it's not 100% but there is something there.

there, i got drop shadows working for all layers.

it was interesting doing a lot of color / fill explorations recently. i have more to do! i think this flat shaded, bitwise color one is my favorite of the crop. but next i want to go back to free rgb because it's so tunable, and it's good for haze etc. and gives me very manual control.

i'm trying out some expressive bitwise tricks for lighting which may end up doing interesting expressive things with hue. the glitches are fun.

there we go, the special cases for tall buildings are working for all permutations. they get quite thin and lacy when enough bridges connect to one building!
