People expect their local leaders to be innovating and pushing the status quo to help people, ESPECIALLY right now. I spent my morning at TriMet's Board of Director's meeting and at Portland City Hall. Here were some of my takeaways.

Let's talk about Universal Basic Mobility! All people - no matter how much money they have or where they live - should be able to CHOOSE how they get around... and should ACTUALLY be safe. This means more than just no-barrier access to transportation: it means transforming our streets.

In my view, Portland's public safety conversation a) needs to NOT just be about law enforcement, and b) needs to be honest about and address systemic, root-cause issues, even as we work to make positive change in the short-term.

Portland City Council needs a better way to break ties... and it needs to come from the legislature, NOT the Mayor. Portlanders voted to affirmatively move away from a government where the Mayor voted on policy, and we should respect that in our tiebreaking rules (which do need reform).

Let's talk a bit more about freeway removal 📣 - Yes, it's possible - Yes, there will be naysayers - If we don't plan and fight for it, it won't happen And yes, I am once again humbly asking for your $5 donation. We had our best fundraising day yesterday! Let's keep it rolling 🙏

We cannot let our most urgent problems cloud our vision for the future. At a Portland City Council candidate forum today, I talked about wanting to make sure we're not making rank-and-file staff bear the brunt of budget cuts, and that we pair a vision for our future with steps on how to get there.

In my view, the City Budget Office ought to be more independent, and Portland City Council deserves to learn about budget information quickly so that they can make smart budgeting decisions on behalf of their constituents. A brief video on this ⬇️

Let's get rid of the Marquam Bridge and I-5 in inner SE. A few thoughts as you watch this clip: - This isn't a new idea. - We'd recover dozens of blocks of the most valuable developable land in the City. - It will never happen LATER if we don't talk about it and plan for it NOW.

Portland's small businesses are what make Portland... Portland! We need to listen, not pretend we know more about their pressures than they do, and do more to help. That can mean a lot of things, including making permitting easier and increasing transit, walking, and biking which increases sales.
