Kristopher Leask, a @scottishgreens.org MSP for Orkney, used his first speech in the Scottish Parliament today to urge the Scottish Government to back more community-owned energy.

After being elected as First Minister, John Swinney set out a vision for Scotland. He's right. We do need to transition to clean energy. But we need to make sure our communities and workers are seeing the benefits directly.

After 50 years of oil, what does Scotland have to show for it? No wealth fund. We can't let the same thing happen with renewables!

There is no just transition without justice for workers. An energy transition without workers is no transition at all. It's a corporate takeover.

Yesterday, we saw Scottish Power's parent company, Iberdrola, report on their massive profits from the first three months of 2026. Why should we let the profits from energy generated here in Scotland go into the pockets of an energy company in Spain?

Stu from @fuelpovertyaction.bsky.social is right: The way our energy system works now is unfair and letting it remain so fuels the far right. The next Scottish government has to do everything in their power to boost community energy, manufacturing in Scotland and public ownership.

In places like Aberdeen, our lives are completely up to the whims of the market. We need to put our energy security firmly in the hands of our communities with more Scotland-based manufacturing and community-owned energy!
