1/3 This testimony describes a pushback from Croatia to Bosnia on the 16th of October 2023. Nature is weaponized to directly inflict harm against people on the move, while allowing authorities to evade accountability.

1/5 Our research suggests that people on the move are pushed towards “mine-suspected” areas during crossings and Pushbacks.

6/8 The construction of the wall began in 2021 in the Çaldıran district and moved southwards to the districts of Özalp, Saray, and Başkale. By 2026, it covered 204 km out of the 295 km border with Iran. Over 220 km of roads were built to support access to the wall and patrolling.

7/8 The wall, 3m high and 2.8m wide, is made of concrete blocks transported to the border and is topped with barbed wire. Built after other infrastructures, it takes on unusual shapes in some areas where it surrounds pre-existing surveillance pylons and observation towers.

4/8 Satellite images show the emergence of the towers between 2020 and 2024, in many locations next to existing observation towers. Pylons equipped with cameras and radars monitor movement both in the territory of Iran and the Van borderland. The system also includes seismic sensors.

5/8 Since 2018, interventions by the Turkish state have radically changed the landscape. Ditches, 3-metres deep and surrounded by barbed wire, appeared in the late 2010s. More were dug in parallel with the wall. At places, satellite imagery shows up to four rows of ditches.

1/8 From the late 2000s to the mid-2010s, the Turkish state built new military outposts, known as kalekol, and new observation towers equipped with surveillance technologies. The satellite images show the emergence of a kalekol in the Çaldıran district between 2010 and 2015.
