A little piece of Great War history on Cannock Chase…

A quiet churchyard on the outskirts of Coventry is the resting place of nine Second World War airmen of the Polish Air Force. Buried at St John the Baptist Church, these airmen were members of 308 Polish Fighter Squadron, which was based at the nearby aerodrome.

On a visit to Enstone Airfield, I was lucky enough to get up close to an 80 per cent scale replica of a Second World War photo reconnaissance Spitfire, similar to those that would have flown from RAF Odiham. It was a real pleasure to see the aircraft up close.

Just outside the Mosta Rotunda, officially named the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, steps lead down to one of Malta’s many air-raid shelters hewn from the limestone during WWII.

Following the Soviet occupation of Latvia on 17 June 1940, the building at the corner of Brīvības and Stabu streets became the Latvian headquarters of the KGB, later known simply as the “Corner House”.
