Gauntlet II (1986) | dungeon crawler | arcade | Atari Games A year later, Atari delivered even more dungeons with a sequel! Players could now choose the same character (party of Wizards anyone?), introduced new maps with features like invisible walls, and still reminded you not to shoot the food.

Wibarm mixed 2D action and 3D exploration. Defeating enemies earned stat improvements (Ability and Mental), different enemies were vulnerable to different weapons, and players were free to explore and leave areas if they were unprepared. You could even 'see' encounters and use an automap!

Combat could also be grindingly numbing especially if you were left solo by a character leaving or stuck with those that were terrible in melee. Offensive spells were weirdly expensive to cast making those something of a liability. Good thing there were healing spells!

Great Greed (1992) | RPG | Game Boy | Namco My original thread for this had no sound which was my bad, so here's a clip that once again shows off a few scenes from the game featuring some of the tastiest NPC names in an RPG...now with audio! Stomach grumbling not included.

Promising "Myth, Magic and Mirth", Tangled Tales strove to deliver on those points with plenty of adventure, unserious NPCs to aid in puzzle solving, and less emphasis on combat and more on actually completing quests. An interesting side quest by Origin from their RPG archive!

Great Greed often felt aimed at welcoming first-time adventurers with easy-to-learn RPG mechanics, automatic and manual saves, and there was even a light walkthrough in the manual. A friendly, portable, otherworldly quest with a recipe for an adventure with multiple toppings, er, endings!

Characters will also join up (and have the annoying habit of leaving you whenever the plot felt like it) during your adventure. Combat was fairly orthodox (and happened a lot), but also had the nice feature of letting players pick whoever you wanted to act out of sequence.

The game received a mixed batch of reviews with praise for its gameplay while noting rough edges like the awkward dialog. There was plenty to grind through, with tons of beasties (though not too much variety!) to blast into fleshy puddles and a skeleton of a story. You could also save anywhere!

Legends of Murder Vol 2: Grey Haven (1991) by James Schmalz was a CRPG for DOS PCs. While not a direct sequel to the first game, it was once more set in the same world where you, as a famous Inspector, are confronted with a new, deadly case at a prestigious school! (a battle detective thread)

Breath of Fire III (1997) by Capcom was an RPG for the Sony PlayStation. In a world where dragons are long extinct, a baby dragon has been discovered! Escaping and then disguising itself as a human boy, what follows is a tale of rogues, mystery, and the return of ancient evil. (a tiny dragon thread)
