Breath of Fire III (1997) by Capcom was an RPG for the Sony PlayStation. In a world where dragons are long extinct, a baby dragon has been discovered! Other neat features included how if you ran away from enemies, their encounter icon appears in the field to try and avoid it (and some areas already had enemies that were visible). Or how when you defeat a chapter's big baddie, the region they terrorized would suddenly be free of ALL monsters.

Later, a new "main character" travelling via space ship (explaining the "Cosmic") arrives to take over the story many years later. Despite not bringing gear comparable to what Van had before leaving the stage (even though she's from a galaxy-spanning civilization), she's filled with determination!

Mostly a solo adventure, from time to time an NPC may tag along and give you advice (and leave all of the fighting to you!). Outside of its simple, button-controlled combat, it followed a basic, easy-to-follow formula for RPGs keeping things simple and familiar as you quest to save the world.

Small, compact areas filled with monsters and obstacles make up the quest, leveling helps to bump your stats (attack, armor, and health), and there are even NPCs, weapons, and health saving food to be found. You even have magic that improves with use. As you level, you also unlock additional spells.

Oni also became something of a hit in Japan! Stardust Crusaders writes in their readme for the English patch that it spawned numerous sequels on various platforms including the PlayStation along with novels and even an anime series. Not bad for a lone warrior with simple (and secret) origins!

Characters will also join up (and have the annoying habit of leaving you whenever the plot felt like it) during your adventure. Combat was fairly orthodox (and happened a lot), but also had the nice feature of letting players pick whoever you wanted to act out of sequence.

Leaning into its multimedia makeover elsewhere, voice acting punctuated key scenes (for better or worse). Additional gameplay options included the relatively uncommon choice to automate stat upgrades on leveling or to distribute the points yourself. Minmaxxing for everyone (choose wisely)!

The game received a mixed batch of reviews with praise for its gameplay while noting rough edges like the awkward dialog. There was plenty to grind through, with tons of beasties (though not too much variety!) to blast into fleshy puddles and a skeleton of a story. You could also save anywhere!
