The one thing Doug Ford has been consistent about is his love of jets. That’s for sure. But he’s provided no evidence that what he’s pushing through at Toronto’s waterfront actually makes sense.

Waterfront for All invited me to address their speaker series where I discussed why we must fight back hard, and fight for a beautiful, livable and vibrant Toronto waterfront that is so much more than just a runway for jets.

“He’s a folksy guy who knows how to lie,” says Councillor Josh Matlow of the Premier, telling John Moore the community should decide whether jets could land at Billy Bishop. He wants Ford to focus on his files - healthcare and education - and not meddle in municipal affairs.

Everyone deserves to feel safe and secure in their home. We introduced RentSafe to protect tenants’ health and safety - and hold our city’s worst landlords to account. We’re now bolstering the program with color-coded signs, remedial action and penalties with teeth.

In politics, it’s necessary sometimes to be oppositional. But it’s important to also be propositional, if you want to get results. We’re working on bringing forward a new & realistic vision for the Ontario Science Centre that everyone, including Queen’s Park, can support.

To make way for jets, Doug Ford could destroy the baseball diamond in Little Norway Park and turn it into an airport parking lot. I played ball with the Downtown Softball League to support their efforts to strike out Ford’s attack on Toronto.

Parking lots and massive runways shouldn’t pave over what we love on our city’s waterfront. There’s a balance of uses now between the existing airport, nearby parks and livable communities. We can’t let Doug Ford screw it up.

The City of Toronto has been debating a Maximum Temperature By-Law for well over a decade. Meanwhile, too many tenants, including seniors and vulnerable people, have been left boiling in their own homes. This is a matter of basic health and safety. And it can’t wait any longer.
