ok i inlined the sampling for all upper bookended layers, and they cast drop shadows now (onto terrain only) and my new rendering function is still only at 12ms! that's really promising, net was 30 for terrain + two bookended pairs before. time to render them.

i think maybe if i find the right magic value, i can do shadows by bitmasking?

ok it's buggy, but i did mostly get cloud scrolling working. unfortunately, it ends up breaking a lot of my optimizations (up to 25 ms per frame from 17), so i'll have to leave it on the cutting room floor for now.

i'm working out all the contextually specific behavior now. it's going to work with mixed heights, too. here's a high building (with the new special case bridge handling) connected to a low building.

you can get some interesting color variation + banding if you use deliberately-not-right bitwise compositing. things bleed into other channels + it messes with relative brightness.

it works, the new renderer is bug free! to catch folks up on the experiment, this is a zero polygon renderer which uses a heightmap raycaster similar to comanche. it's a single pass with terrain + n bookended pairs of layered geometry, so you can do overlaps.

ok i got individual layer colors working with precomputed! (actual colors are messed up at present.) i don't yet know if this is actually faster than the other approach. it depends where the bottlenecks are. if array lookups are where it's binding, then this is no better. if it's per ray math, good.

ok that's the top to bottom order of operations + all lookups + inlined interpolation for the new renderer! i just added depth test. without further optimizations we are at 15ms, just barely squeaking in to hit 60fps! about twice the performance of the previous renderer.

it was interesting doing a lot of color / fill explorations recently. i have more to do! i think this flat shaded, bitwise color one is my favorite of the crop. but next i want to go back to free rgb because it's so tunable, and it's good for haze etc. and gives me very manual control.
