if your color is "dirtier", eg more of the bits have 1s in them, then bitwise tricks like this work better. this is fainter than i want, but see this is darkening more of the colors now.

today i'm doing generative work. i have two heights of bridges, and i'm going to add higher bridges as well. i'm also going to work on special cases for how bridges connect to buildings and walls. i really like the compound curves around these 1st floor ones, and i want to continue that language.

with this approach to color, one thing that's a little tricky is haze. here's a first pass. normally i'd have channels stored separately, and i could perform per-channel operations and combine. but as a stylistic decision / self-imposed challenge i'm seeing how feasible it is to do it without.

this sort of thing is honestly such a huge part of why doing game development is so wonderful.

there we go, the special cases for tall buildings are working for all permutations. they get quite thin and lacy when enough bridges connect to one building!

i'm adding some special cases for bridges between high buildings. they get special cutouts in the roof, and embankments at the edges of the bridge.

i liked this intermediate state of the renderer, so i saved off a build.

the infilling is working, with depth test! now i need to add clipping for the bookended heightmaps.
