oh! that was an unexpected bug. i was just going to do dithered shadows and i ended up with... i think it's the span lengths messing with the dither?

ok that's interesting. you potentially get some compelling chromatic effects when you do "dirty" initial colors and do shadows by randomly dropping out individual bits.

you /can/ juggle weapon cooldowns in luna abyss. here is two.

ok this is promising- with shadows (not rendering) for everything, it's at 10ms. but that's only with inlined point samples, not interpolation. if i turn on interpolation w/ a function, it's 23ms or so. i'm going go try inlining.

ok i inlined the sampling for all upper bookended layers, and they cast drop shadows now (onto terrain only) and my new rendering function is still only at 12ms! that's really promising, net was 30 for terrain + two bookended pairs before. time to render them.

messing with dithering a bit more. i kind of want to try this with stricter color restrictions. i don't think i want to dither the colors though, just the shadows?

i thought i would take a stab at just projection for the additional primitives, which resulted in the most baroque graphical glitch

these enemies, like the blue shielded enemies, have a weapon specific paper rock scissors shield. but you can't do good sustained damage with the lance once you break their shield, and you quickly realize this. however, you can juggle it with the shieldbreaker (or scout) to quickly take them down.

you can get some interesting color variation + banding if you use deliberately-not-right bitwise compositing. things bleed into other channels + it messes with relative brightness.
