oh! that was an unexpected bug. i was just going to do dithered shadows and i ended up with... i think it's the span lengths messing with the dither?

i liked this intermediate state of the renderer, so i saved off a build.

surprisingly, even with so much of the little sensor ring (is that the potentiometer itself?) missing. the drift seems to be nonexistent. i wonder if it will come back later. looking at it in a calibration tool, there is no evident drift and the flutter it had is gone.

it works, the new renderer is bug free! to catch folks up on the experiment, this is a zero polygon renderer which uses a heightmap raycaster similar to comanche. it's a single pass with terrain + n bookended pairs of layered geometry, so you can do overlaps.

the infilling is working, with depth test! now i need to add clipping for the bookended heightmaps.

there, i got drop shadows working for all layers.

i'm working on getting the new renderer to match the tuning set for the old renderer now. this handles color differently, at present- it's all precomputed + bitwise math. i'm going to explore haze (or hazeless looks) with this, but if i'm not content i'll go back to more on-the-fly color.

i think maybe if i find the right magic value, i can do shadows by bitmasking?

if your color is "dirtier", eg more of the bits have 1s in them, then bitwise tricks like this work better. this is fainter than i want, but see this is darkening more of the colors now.
