This isn’t just a slush fund but a recruitment ad. Michael Fanone explains that “pardon plus payday” is how Trump builds a political militia. He’s telling violent loyalists that if they hurt people for him, he will protect them and even pay them for it.

A retainer is what you pay so someone is available when you need them. Trump is effectively putting a retainer on a political mob that has already proven it will act violently on his behalf.

The move here is obvious. Erase years of right-wing extremist violence, recast groups perceived by Trump and his hard-core supporters as political enemies and threats to society, and call it “counterterrorism.

There is a difference between maintaining the National Mall and treating it like a personal branding project. A no-bid contract for a rushed cosmetic overhaul deserves scrutiny, especially when the explanation keeps shifting.

Courts cannot become “empty fronts” for people misusing the legal system. If justice becomes fraud, “going through the motions without content and without meaning,” then the rule of law itself starts to collapse.
