“Warrior-focused legal culture” is a phrase worth watching closely. In a healthy system, military lawyers help commanders fight lawfully. In a dangerous system, lawyers are pressured to make unlawful or abusive decisions look legally defensible.

America’s global power was built on confidence in U.S. rule of law, not just military might. That confidence has collapsed internationally, and the entire foundation of American prosperity has become fragile.

If the war is over, why are we still negotiating the terms to end it? Authoritarian governments have to manufacture victory, deny reality, and demand the public accepts the fiction the government gives them.

Trump does not simply like dictators. He likes the performance of unchecked authority. He admires leaders who appear immune to accountability, who command choreographed displays of loyalty, and who don’t have to bargain with legislatures, courts, journalists, protesters, or voters.

Trump continues to upend the world order. For decades, U.S. Taiwan policy has been strategic ambiguity. But after the China summit, he’s publicly made that ambiguity less ambiguous, and not in Taiwan’s favor.

“They turn out to be right” is the most troubling statement in this whole diatribe. After claiming he knows “very little about it,” he proceeds to endorse the idea that crimes committed on his behalf were not crimes at all, but righteous acts against a corrupt system. Unconscionable.
