Wibarm mixed 2D action and 3D exploration. Defeating enemies earned stat improvements (Ability and Mental), different enemies were vulnerable to different weapons, and players were free to explore and leave areas if they were unprepared. You could even 'see' encounters and use an automap!

The interface was icon driven and your status was also displayed with descriptive text instead of crunchy digits. You moved around using the top-down map in the upper right and the left window gave a graphic view of the area. Big icons for what you can do were shown below that window.

Despite sticking to the basics, it made the most of them with plenty of NPCs to talk to, charming graphics in exploration and combat, and a quest with unusual characters and monsters inspired by Japanese folklore. Mostly a solo adventure, from time to time an NPC may tag along and give you advice (and leave all of the fighting to you!). Outside of its simple, button-controlled combat, it followed a basic, easy-to-follow formula for RPGs keeping things simple and familiar as you quest to save the world.
