Combat was staunchly traditionalist in sticking to what worked before, improving it with small tweaks while embellishing its presentation with fancy effects. It also didn't transition to a special backdrop or screen - if you ran into an enemy in a hallway, you fought in that hallway!

Mostly a solo adventure, from time to time an NPC may tag along and give you advice (and leave all of the fighting to you!). Outside of its simple, button-controlled combat, it followed a basic, easy-to-follow formula for RPGs keeping things simple and familiar as you quest to save the world.

Combat was turn-based and didn't award experience (only gold). Fortunately, death isn't the end as Eldritch will bring you back in case that happens with a slight scolding. Getting hurt in combat, like being bruised, can even affect your stats like lowering my Charisma to Offensive. Yikes.

Legends of Murder: Volume One - Stonedale Castle (1989) by James Schmalz was an RPG murder mystery for DOS PCs. Wait! Murder you say? Indeed, for the king lies dead and you, as a famous Inspector, must explore the castle, talk to NPCs, find clues, and discover his killer! (an it's elementary thread)

Encounters were more in your face in this chapter, but unlike the first game, it came with a text file filled with hints on how to solve it (if not how to survive some of the more crushing surprises!) continuing to stand out as a murder mystery series that also spoke RPG.

It was also took advantage of the PS1's hardware as the first BoF to use 3D landscapes with 2D sprites. Story elements were often told in-game alongside puzzles, mini-games like an improved fishing system, and even developing a fairy village later on among other surprises.

Later, a new "main character" travelling via space ship (explaining the "Cosmic") arrives to take over the story many years later. Despite not bringing gear comparable to what Van had before leaving the stage (even though she's from a galaxy-spanning civilization), she's filled with determination!

Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II (1985) | action RPG | PC platforms | Nihon Falcom Falcom's revolutionary action RPG featured an adventure packed with features like a unique skill system and a vast, underground world to explore. It also received many ports such as a slight glow up on the PC-98 in 1995!

Characters will also join up (and have the annoying habit of leaving you whenever the plot felt like it) during your adventure. Combat was fairly orthodox (and happened a lot), but also had the nice feature of letting players pick whoever you wanted to act out of sequence.
