Great Greed often felt aimed at welcoming first-time adventurers with easy-to-learn RPG mechanics, automatic and manual saves, and there was even a light walkthrough in the manual. A friendly, portable, otherworldly quest with a recipe for an adventure with multiple toppings, er, endings!

Cosmic Fantasy 2 (1991) was an RPG by Nippon Telenet for the TurboGrafx-CD. Featuring traditional, turn-based combat, a big world, and a story to unwind, players take on the role of Van whose crush, Laura, is kidnapped by a wicked mage for the power she secretly holds! (a space twist thread)

Like first game, you play a hybrid fighter/mage (though will need to learn spells on site) tasked to search for clues, poke about the area for goodies to fill your inventory with, listen to NPCs' stories, and ultimately, find the murderer responsible for a student's death at a famed magic academy!

Combat could also be grindingly numbing especially if you were left solo by a character leaving or stuck with those that were terrible in melee. Offensive spells were weirdly expensive to cast making those something of a liability. Good thing there were healing spells!

Broderbund Software ported Wibarm for MS-DOS machines beyond Japan in 1989, tweaking the graphics among other things such as the story crawl (the original Wibarm had a mix of English and Japanese text), though sound took a hit.

Gauntlet II (1986) | dungeon crawler | arcade | Atari Games A year later, Atari delivered even more dungeons with a sequel! Players could now choose the same character (party of Wizards anyone?), introduced new maps with features like invisible walls, and still reminded you not to shoot the food.

Localization house, Working Designs, brought Cosmic Fantasy 2 over to North America in 1992 making it the first in its series to do go beyond Japan. They also tweaked the game's difficulty (apparently making enemies a bit harder) and edited a few scenes from the original.

It was published by Softdisk as part of their "disk magazine" offering which was popular back in the 80s and early 90s. Even John Carmack of id fame would publish a few of his RPGs through it at one point before introducing everyone to Blazkowicz' Nazi-stomping action and multi-story cyberdemons.

Cosmic Fantasy 2's presentation added plenty of gloss over its gameplay, garnering fans and even a limited reprint years later for the Nintendo Switch in 2024. And like the TG-16 CD version of Ys I & II, Cosmic Fantasy 2 became another cutting edge example of the kind of CD magic that was possible!
