Let’s talk about this moment from Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 5. This isn’t a slight against Percy and Annabeth shippers, I am one of you. But I wanted to talk about why this declaration, that in context comes from a place of guilt and fear, is being read by a lot of people as romantic.

That’s a very terrifying moment for Percy. Realizing that he has more in common with Luke than he thought shakes him. He’s telling Annabeth because he trusts her more than himself and because she knows Luke. This isn’t about declaring his love for her. It’s a warning, to protect her from him.

It’s a messy soup of cultural baggage that I want us to keep in mind when we see moments like this scene in Percy Jackson. Because while this is deeply emotionally affecting moment for many of us, it’s also a very poignant depiction of a traumatized child afraid he might be a monster.

Like I see people talking about Ilya being hard to read on the show and I’m confused because Connor Storrie is acting his ass off in these small quiet moments where you can see plan on his face that Ilya is falling in love with Shane and absolutely terrified about it.

This is marketing. The mechanical parts beside the supposedly human-like features is meant to prime us to compare it to robots, not people. The dead-eyes gaze and clunky movements are no more realistic than that $20 Amazon wig on its head. This is fetish content. Not technological advancement.
