Rather than confront the core issues affecting Americans, Trump focuses on aesthetics and grandeur. That is the autocrat’s playbook: accumulate power, ignore the needs of the majority, and distract from the resulting failures with political noise and chaos.

“Warrior-focused legal culture” is a phrase worth watching closely. In a healthy system, military lawyers help commanders fight lawfully. In a dangerous system, lawyers are pressured to make unlawful or abusive decisions look legally defensible.

The public deserves competent health leadership. Instead, key federal health posts are vacant, and the ones that are filled include RFK Jr. Dr. Oz, a penile-implant specialist in the infectious disease chain of command and a non-scientist acting FDA commissioner. This is a crisis of competence.
