Arsys would continue to push their poly talents with a number of titles after Wibarm such as 1988's Star Cruiser which also debuted on the PC-88 in Japan and was later ported to other systems like the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1990, preceding Star Fox, taking players into a 3D space sandbox!

Promising "Myth, Magic and Mirth", Tangled Tales strove to deliver on those points with plenty of adventure, unserious NPCs to aid in puzzle solving, and less emphasis on combat and more on actually completing quests. An interesting side quest by Origin from their RPG archive!

It was also published as part of Softdisk's "Big Blue Disk" monthly series which had also distributed a few of John Carmack's (of id Software fame) early CRPGs. A creative use of disk media in the 80s and early 90s, a "disk magazine" was a neat way to get apps and games in your mail!

You were also the Guy Ritchie version of a medieval Sherlock Holmes. Word descriptions for stats replaced crunch, combat was turn-based text, and leveling toughened you up. Death was also pretty forgiving when you didn't die, just kind of broke away to go at it again (hopefully with better luck).

The interface was icon driven and your status was also displayed with descriptive text instead of crunchy digits. You moved around using the top-down map in the upper right and the left window gave a graphic view of the area. Big icons for what you can do were shown below that window.

Several years later, Nihon Falcom demonstrated how far they had come with a multimedia makeover of Legend of Heroes' port to the TG-16 CD (1991) featuring more of the amazing music their titles were also renowned for. Mieko Ishikawa, one of Falcom Sound Team's founders, had also worked on the game.

Combat could also be grindingly numbing especially if you were left solo by a character leaving or stuck with those that were terrible in melee. Offensive spells were weirdly expensive to cast making those something of a liability. Good thing there were healing spells!

Small, compact areas filled with monsters and obstacles make up the quest, leveling helps to bump your stats (attack, armor, and health), and there are even NPCs, weapons, and health saving food to be found. You even have magic that improves with use. As you level, you also unlock additional spells.

Its ingredients also featured an environmental theme. Like a Captain Planet baddie, Bio-Hazard Harry (Bio-Haz in the game) is seeking to pollute the Kingdom of Greene. During your quest, you'll also deal with things like exposing a corrupt politician and journey to places like the Empire of Sushi!

Mighty Final Fight (1993) | beat 'em up | NES | Capcom Capcom's hit beat 'em up from 1989, Final Fight, punched its way into an unexpected, chibi-sized weight class on the NES! Like its arcade roots, players could kick, punch, and suplex their way through Metro City, now with RPG-like leveling.
