Promising "Myth, Magic and Mirth", Tangled Tales strove to deliver on those points with plenty of adventure, unserious NPCs to aid in puzzle solving, and less emphasis on combat and more on actually completing quests. An interesting side quest by Origin from their RPG archive!

Stardust Crusaders with aishsha created an unofficial English patch and released it in 2015. Originally titled Kininkou Maroku Oni, this portable adventure was a straightforward, bare bones RPG to scratch that dungeon crawling itch.

It was published by Softdisk as part of their "disk magazine" offering which was popular back in the 80s and early 90s. Even John Carmack of id fame would publish a few of his RPGs through it at one point before introducing everyone to Blazkowicz' Nazi-stomping action and multi-story cyberdemons.

It was also published as part of Softdisk's "Big Blue Disk" monthly series which had also distributed a few of John Carmack's (of id Software fame) early CRPGs. A creative use of disk media in the 80s and early 90s, a "disk magazine" was a neat way to get apps and games in your mail!

The interface was icon driven and your status was also displayed with descriptive text instead of crunchy digits. You moved around using the top-down map in the upper right and the left window gave a graphic view of the area. Big icons for what you can do were shown below that window.

Leaning into its multimedia makeover elsewhere, voice acting punctuated key scenes (for better or worse). Additional gameplay options included the relatively uncommon choice to automate stat upgrades on leveling or to distribute the points yourself. Minmaxxing for everyone (choose wisely)!

Localization house, Working Designs, brought Cosmic Fantasy 2 over to North America in 1992 making it the first in its series to do go beyond Japan. They also tweaked the game's difficulty (apparently making enemies a bit harder) and edited a few scenes from the original.

Cosmic Fantasy 2 (1991) was an RPG by Nippon Telenet for the TurboGrafx-CD. Featuring traditional, turn-based combat, a big world, and a story to unwind, players take on the role of Van whose crush, Laura, is kidnapped by a wicked mage for the power she secretly holds! (a space twist thread)

Legends of Murder: Volume One - Stonedale Castle (1989) by James Schmalz was an RPG murder mystery for DOS PCs. Wait! Murder you say? Indeed, for the king lies dead and you, as a famous Inspector, must explore the castle, talk to NPCs, find clues, and discover his killer! (an it's elementary thread)
