🧵 Today I met with Matthew Pennycook who is the Minister for Housing. We met to discuss service charges, raising the concerns that many residents have brought to me regarding lack of redress, poor value for money and awful communication. (1/2)

🧵 Far too many people in this country feel that the system doesn't work for them. This Health Bill is a chance to tackle health inequalities and in turn improve productivity within the NHS. (1/2)

16 4

🧵 I don't like that we are now in the era of the 'strong man.' I'm proud of this country and how we were part of the countries which came together to establish the League of Nations and then the United Nations after the Second World War. (1/2)

28 2

🧵 It is unacceptable that Jewish people now feel less safe in Britain. In Oxford, our interfaith community stand in solidarity with each other against all forms of attack against any faith. (1/2)

The Lib Dems have made gains in the last seven consecutive local elections. In these Local Elections we are hoping to make gains in both Conservative facing areas in the home counties and Labour facing areas in London. People are voting Lib Dem because they want local champions in their areas.

I met with Wes Streeting to talk about Summertown GP Surgery. His team have committed to working with local health systems to explore every avenue possible for funding the new site. This is not the end but it was positive to have the opportunity to speak with Wes and get his officials onside.

22 4

Making sure that our GP services are revving on all cylinders is key to making sure that patients get the access to NHS services that they need. We are at a crucial moment in securing a new site in Summertown. I raised with Wes Streeting the role of the District Valuer in this process today.

🧵 For too many people, the quality of palliative care is a postcode lottery. We welcome the Government's forthcoming Modern Service Framework, but with some scepticism. The Committee recommends that ICBs and the Department are held accountable, with consequences for failure. (1/2)

15 1

I came into politics to change things for my local community. There are really good people who may want to stand as councillors and MPs who are deterred by the tone of debate. We need to change some of the ways in which we engage in politics, without diminishing anyone else. #bbcqt

🧵 The latest round of resident doctors strikes announced yesterday are again coming at the wrong time. It is stark how many of our constituents want to see the NHS improve and this is yet again another stumbling block. (1/2)

19 6

Now is the exact wrong moment to turn our back on the promise which we made to the children of our country. Children took part in the Friday for Futures movement to make clear to parliamentarian's that they wanted a commitment on Net Zero. To renege on this promise would be harm their futures.

36 8

The problems in palliative care are long standing and inadequate. The postcode lottery of care is not acceptable and we are pleased that the Government wants to give this issue attention.

28 10

Last week I spoke in Parliament about the Health and Social Care Committee's Community Mental Health Report. We were baffled that there is no waiting time target for mental health like there is for elective care.

22 11

The circumstances since the Brexit referendum have changed. Everyone is agreed that we must increase defence spending, but this will only be achievable with an increase in economic growth. What would shift the dial on the economy far more than anything else is a closer relationship with Europe.

Yesterday I met with the Minister for Water, following on from my PMQ where I challenged the PM on the future of Thames Water. She made me aware of panels held by the Consumer Council for Water which will listen to the views of customers. I will update constituents as I hear more about them.

22 6

The Mandelson Files released today are damning. The fact that Starmer appointed Peter Mandelson knowing that he had continued a relationship with Jeffery Epstein after his conviction in 2008 shows serious lack of judgement. This release is only the beginning of this scandal for the Government.

41 13

I got into politics as I saw the issues with our education system from being a teacher for over a decade. One of the biggest issues in my inbox is SEND provision, and parents are crying out for change.

26 6

The Liberal Democrats believe that jury trials are the cornerstone of our justice system. Scrapping them will have little effect on the courts backlog, whilst curtailing a fundamental right. We have a plan to tackle the issues in our court system and still protect the right to trial by jury.

37 8

Today I challenged vaccination programme bosses on institutional complacency.

26 7

As part of our Food and Weight Management inquiry we questioned the supermarkets on what they are doing to help incentivise healthy eating. Take a look at some of the questions we asked them below. You can see more from the session here: committees.parliament.uk/event/26287/...

What does a meal have to do with Parliament? 👇️

My residents are sick of being let down by Thames Water. The company is dead in the water. The PM should deny the £16 billon rescue deal that is about to cross his desk and establish a public benefit company. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss this further with the Minister.

88 23

The changes to leaseholds announced today are welcome, but the Government must go further to tackle rip off service charges. Social housing tenants are often the ones left most affected by these rip off charges. I am pleased that the Minister has agreed to meet to discuss this issue further.

40 6

The top down, Westminster-centric approach to how we build houses is not the answer. The Liberal Democrats will always favour a bottom up approach, working with communities, like we did in the Vale of White Horse. Neighbourhood planning is the way forward.

18 7

Trump is acting as the world's bully and there comes a point where you have to do something. Sucking up doesn't work. We have to put threats on the table. Trump adores the Royal Family and the royal visit to America is leverage that no one else has. We should use it.

41 12

South East Water have done the extraordinary by making Thames Water look good. The Liberal Democrats have long called for a better regulator to fix our broken water industry. We are also calling for water companies such as Thames Water to be made a public benefit company.

54 16

I was shocked when a midwife in Oxford told me stories of sewage dripping through the ceilings at the hospital and into the maternity unit. Whilst staff at the hospital do their upmost to provide the best care for patients, they can only do so if supported with extra funding from the Government.

37 11

You can hear the rest of the clip from BBC Radio 4's 'Today in Parliament' segment on the committee session here:

Last week, the Health and Social Care Committee questioned Stephen Kinnock on the findings of the report which the committee commissioned into palliative care. The reports findings were worse than we were expecting. It is clear that palliative care services are not good enough and must improve.

36 16

The chronic mismanagement of Thames Water is why I called a debate on its future in Parliament yesterday. Sadly, stories like Len and Jenny's of sewage in peoples homes are all too common. If Thames Water cannot be trusted to do the basics, then what can they be trusted to do?

43 13

The Liberal Democrats have long argued for shifting the big levers on the economy to make a difference to people's lives. That's why we are pushing for a Customs Union with the EU. We have to see shifts in the economy so that small business can thrive.

51 9

Happy New Year! Wishing everyone across Oxford West & Abingdon a happy and prosperous 2026! Here's a little look at what I got up to in 2025...

41 4

Yesterday in @commonshealth.bsky.social we were joined by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting. This is what we asked him...

10 5

This morning I spoke to Radio 4 Today about weight loss jabs. Many perceive them as being a silver bullet but the @commonshealth.bsky.social Committee don't think they are. We’re running an inquiry looking at this but also the food industry which lies at the root case if the problem

18 2

Since 2019, the NHS has spent more money on maternity negligence claims than the entire NHS maternity budget for same period. Investment now in maternity services will reap rewards very quickly. The Government does not need to wait for the Amos review to start making a change.

59 19

The Tories botched Brexit deal has left us £90 billion worse per year. The Lib Dems have a plan for a Customs Union with the EU that would bring around £25 billion to the economy. The Lib Dems will bring a vote on this next week and I hope Labour backbenchers will support us.

53 23

The Secretary of State for Health is absolutely right that the NHS must innovate and renew. I am concerned that the focus on physical health in last weeks budget risks deprioritising mental health instead.

16 3

Today I asked the Prime Minister if he would look at Lib Dem plans to introduce a regulator and a cap on outrageous, rip-off service charges. The stories of Allison and Rebecca being ripped off by the wild west of the service charge sector are sadly all too common.

34 6

The news that the NHS may now have to pay up to £3 billion more for drugs from the US is concerning. There needs to be clarity from the Government about who exactly will pay for this. The Government shouldn't prioritise economic growth over the health of the NHS.

26 7

In yesterday's Budget debate, I raised the issue of mental health services. I am alarmed by reports that the Government may water down the investment standard for mental health. This investment has proven to be vital in creating a parity between physical and mental health.

20 5

I'm so pleased that the two-child benefit cap has been scrapped, something the Lib Dems have long campaigned for. However, the Chancellor missed a huge opportunity to reverse the £90bn a year cost of the Tories botched Brexit deal and announce a new UK-EU Customs Union.

38 10

Around 300,000 women have been affected as a result of being administered DES to prevent miscarriages. It was right that the Health Secretary apologised for this, but more must be done. I am pleased that he will meet with me and campaigners to discuss the issue further.

6 2

On Monday, market traders in Oxford were telling me how shoppers are hanging off doing their Christmas shopping as they wait for The Budget. Shoppers are worried about how much money they will have in their pocket after tomorrow's Budget and the speculation has only added to it.

I know that flooding is something which my constituents are worried about. The rainfall over the weekend raised concerns, particularly in South Abingdon, which has been badly hit recently. The EA have flood barriers ready to go in the event of future flood threats in the area.

10 2

Many constituents write to me to say how shocked they are that international law often fails to hold those accountable for their actions. We have a duty to bolster international law, not undermine it. Today I asked for an update on the UK's response to the ICJ advisory opinion.

41 12

The climate crisis is absolutely real and we must shift to renewable sources of energy. However, there are significant issues with the Botley West solar farm plans. The developers must cooperate with the planning inspectorate and offer more community benefit to the local area.

12 3

It was great to join BBC Radio Oxford yesterday to take calls from listeners. I am so pleased to see progress on Lodge Hill after many years of campaigning on this issue by local residents and Oxfordshire Lib Dems. The works will greatly improve congestion around Abingdon.

13 3

I was shocked by the revelations in the ITV News Investigation into the DES Scandal. That is why I have written to Wes Streeting, asking for an update into the Department for Health & Social Care's investigation into the generational impact of DES.

11 5

Nada, an Oxford plastic surgeon, told me stories of children in Gaza suffering wounds, which without care will lead to life-changing injuries. I pushed the Government to work to establish a humanitarian corridor from Gaza to the West Bank for those injured to access treatment.

52 15

I'm delighted that Cowley Branch Line is to reopen to passenger trains. This is a really important milestone for Oxford residents and beyond, delivering the connectivity that our congested city desperately needs. Listen to me in conversation with @bbcoxford.bsky.social's Sophie Law. 📻

9 3

Earlier this year I saw for myself the incredible work which the Hospital at Home team from the John Radcliffe Hospital do. I was shocked to hear that their funding is now being cut and asked the Government how this was compatible with their transition to community care.

31 10

Over the past week I have been inundated with concerns from constituents about changes to IB funding and how this may affect Europa School. As a teacher of the IB for 11 years I know how vital this qualification is. Today I asked the minister to reconsider his decision.

12 4

This week the Mental Health Bill came back to Parliament. I raised the case of my constituents Cyril and Dianne who lost their son Leon as result of failures in the system. The nominated persons clause in the bill will be of great comfort to parents such as Cyril and Dianne.

16 3

Workforce is key to ensuring the sustainability of pharmacies in the community. I expressed the importance of having community pharmacists at the heart of the NHS workforce plan and asked the minister for an update.

13 2

The Prime Minister's decision to recognise the state of Palestine was long overdue, but it is meaningless without the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Yesterday I asked the Prime Minister to confirm his commitment to making a two-state solution a reality.

56 14

The talk of enduring and lasting peace is encouraging, but this will only come with the creation of an Independent Palestinian State. Palestinians must be in the driving seat of their own future.

60 18

UK recognition of the State of Palestine was a promise made to my great grandfather decades ago. While on its own, recognition won’t solve anything without further action, it is a down payment on peace. Today we have just a little more hope, and hope is contagious. 📻 on BBC world service this AM:

149 43

Thank you @paulettehamiltonmp.bsky.social for meeting with and raising the case of my constituent Dianne, who tragically lost her son Leon to suicide. I welcome the govt commitment to improve continuity of care and monitoring for those discharged to the community.
